A SERIOUS MESSAGE:
HI EVERYONE!
My name is Charlotte Nicdao, and I have a band called Charlotte Nicdao and the Sloth Orchestra.
I formed the band a few months ago, as I’d been very seriously studying jazz at the VCA, which seemed the obvious path for me to take after very seriously studying jazz in high school. Being very serious was kind of driving me mad - so I decided to drop out of all the things and do something totally unserious. That is, become a POP SINGER.
It’s been a lot of fun so far. Me and the Sloth Orchestra have had some amazing times over the past couple of months - the highlights being things like supporting Vaudeville Smash at the Northcote Social Club, our four week residency at the Wesley Anne, and reaching the top of the Triple J Unearthed charts.
My costumes have gotten progressively more ridiculous, the songs have gotten progressively more explicit, and the drinks consumed at gigs have gotten progressively more numerous.But six months in I’ve discovered that being a performing artist is a lot more difficult than I first imagined it might be. See - me and the Sloth Orchestra really want to lay down some of the tracks we’ve been performing in a serious way, but turns out that shit costs money. Which we don’t have.
That’s where you come in. We’re looking for a little starter fund to get us into a studio: recording, mixing and mastering our debut EP. Then packaging it up all nice (we want to include a crazy comic in the cover featuring all of us as superheroes), and getting it out to YOU. We’re not signed to a record label, who would traditionally fund a recording like this. Instead, we want to eliminate all the middle men and keep this between us (the band) and you (the listener). I’m not asking for all your money (unless you’re down for that in which case go right ahead!), but if you pre-purchase the EP for $10 then it means we can afford to make it, and then you get it as soon as it’s done for the price that we’re going to sell it for anyway. Does that make sense? It’s just all happening in a slightly different order to how records were traditionally made...
We’ve had amazing support so far - and we just need a little more to get us to that next stage. In all seriousness - I don’t think we could do this without you. I have a lot of faith in this project, it’s made me happier so far than any other creative venture ever has - and I think that a bunch of other people are being made happy by it to. Can you help me and the Sloth Orchestra to get it out to even more people, so there can be even more happy?
I spent some time thinking up some KEWL rewards (have a look at them over there ----->) and I want to give them to you!!! Obviously some of them involve us actually hanging out together, so make sure if you choose those options you are Melbourne-based or happy to travel.
