What is WAC-7?

WAC-7 is the Seventh World Archaeological Congress, which will be held at the Dead Sea in Jordan, 13th-18th January, 2013. WAC Congresses are held every four years, like the Olympics. They are THE most important event in the field of archaeology. WAC-7 will bring together over 1,000 archaeologists from 70 countries to share their knowledge and expertise through lectures, seminars, workshops and more. The Patrons of WAC Congresses include Prince Charles, Nelson Mandela and Harriet Mayor Fulbright. For WAC-7, the Patron is King Abdullah II Bin Al Hussein of Jordan.

Global economic inequalities are appalling. For example, people in countries like Japan, Australia or the United States earn 10 TIMES more than people doing the same job in countries such as Poland, Vanuatu or Botswana. WAC is committed to making sure that people from all countries can participate in WAC-7. It is providing funding for around 300 people to attend the Congress. These are voices that are rarely heard at other archaeological conferences—and never in the numbers that are present at WAC Congresses. The discussions at WAC-7 will be unique.

What is this project about? WAC-7 sounds great, but what do YOU plan to do?
Not everyone can attend WAC-7 in person, so we are trying to get WAC-7 online. WAC has generously offered us the opportunity to film all the events at WAC-7 and to give us free reign in pestering the rock-stars of the archaeological world—with your questions, as incentives to whip up the funding for this project. We have also been given unlimited access to the Congress, if we have the people power and equipment. Subject to the permission of individual presenters (some of the material is sure to be politically sensitive), we can record EVERYTHING and make it available to EVERYONE. We will be able to use the footage to make the conference available to people all around the world through the internet.

Who are 'We'?
We are the Flinders University Archaeological Society (ArchSoc), working in collaboration with the World Archaeological Congress (WAC).

Why do you need my help?
We need your help to make WAC-7 available online. Donations through 'Pozible' can take this project from a dream to a reality.

How much do you need to make this happen?
We need $15,000. This will cover the costs of a dedicated platform, server hosting, equipment hire and a Jordanian crew to film WAC-7, assisted by Pozible volunteers. If we reach the threshold, there will be a small contribution towards getting the WAC-7 Pozible team to WAC-7.

What happens when you reach the funding threshold?
It will be possible for individuals to obtain live access to WAC-7 on line for a maximum of $50 for individuals, or $100 for organisations. The respective rates for students, Indigenous people and people from low-income countries will be $25 for individuals and $50 for institutions.

Why don't you just ask people to take footage on their phones and upload it to YouTube?
This is a good point, and we have considered this.  We decided that we could not be certain that it would happen if we did it this way.  We want to be sure that we are able to deliver the product that we are promising, so we are using a professional company to provide the basic platform.  Moreover, we'd like to be able to make some of this material available for teaching, and need the best quality production for this.  We hope that this new site will help us to create a community of archeologists to continue their conversations within a consolidated location after the event.

Who qualifies for sponsored online access to WAC-7?
Sponsored access will be allocated to students, Indigenous people and people from low-income countries. We are using WAC’s categories for low and high-income countries. These are based on OECD rates, taking into account the Global Financial Crisis.

Low-income Countries:
All countries not listed below, as well as Greece, Italy, Ireland, Spain and Portugal.

High-income Countries: Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, USA and the majority of Western Europe.

What kind of questions can I ask?
We expect that questions will be about archaeology or professional careers in archaeology. Questions should be sensible and not personally intrusive.

Who are giving the rewards? What kind of archaeologists are they?
The rewards come from people from all over the world.  Click on their names to find out who they are and what they do. We thank: Ian Hodder, Rasmi Shoocongdej, Vincent Copley, K.
