THIS WILD SONG is a series of photographic portraits and interviews with Australian women visual artists who have a unique voice.

I created this project to celebrate the wealth of talent in Australia, to help raise the profiles of the artists, to strengthen the arts community and also to address gender equality in the arts.

The theme of the portraits is for the artist to become a part of their work by incorporating an element of their practice, but I also want the portraits to reflect who the artist is as a person. I currently have 100+ artists confirmed as being a part of This Wild Song showcasing a wide variety of mediums and practices, from all over Australia. There are so many talented artists I can definitely see this being a life long project! I have photographed 16 women so far and it's already been such an amazing experience. I'm collaborating with artists I admire and gaining an insight into their practice, everyone has been so wonderful to work with.

The portraits and interviews are featured on the website www.thiswildsong.com.au

It is my goal for the website to become an encyclopaedia of artists where you can search artists by name, genre, medium or location. It will be an invaluable resource that is free and accessible to all, where you can learn more about your favourite artists and discover new ones!

The portraits will be exhibited in a variety of locations. I have already shown select portraits in Likeness, a group portraiture show at Town Hall Gallery (Melbourne) and will be exhibiting an extended show with them as well.

In the future I'll have the complete 150 portraits and interviews printed as a full colour book. I'm researching publishers and will be approaching them with my proposal.

This project will create so many fantastic opportunities like hosting forums with artists from the project for a variety of audiences, speaking at schools, involving the community in the creation of the portraits, as well as sharing the project on the above platforms.

I've been working on This Wild Song for about 4 years and it's been completely self funded.  I have submitted grant applications to Australian Council for the Arts and VicArts for funding and will continue to apply until I am successful.  I've photographed 16 portraits so far (see list below) and your generous contribution will allow me to create another 20 portraits.

After extensive research I have budgeted for $600 per portrait which covers the following costs:

- purchasing fabric to create costumes

- hire and buy costumes

- pay costume maker an hourly fee

- studio hire

- purchasing props

- purchasing materials to make props

- petrol, parking and travel costs for meeting with the artist, location scouting and shooting the portrait

- costs of creating rewards

- printing an enlargement to be given to each subject of portrait as a thank you

I'll even be hiring birds for Erika Gofton's portrait!

Activity and steps involved to create the portraits:

1. Research the artists and their practices

2. Conduct meetings with the artists to learn more about their processes and get to know them personally

3. Develop the concept for the portrait in collaboration with the artist

4. Research and source, or build, props

5. Location scouting

6. Design costume

7. Liaise with costume maker to create pattern for the costume and sew the garment

8. Build set (if required)

9. Schedule portrait shoot

10. Travel (within Victoria or interstate)

11. Shoot the portrait with film and digital photography

12. Edit the portrait

13. Obtain the subject’s approval for the final image

14. Conduct interview

15. Feature portrait and interview on website

16. Publish an entry on my personal blog sharing the concept of the portrait and how it was created with Behind The Scenes photos
