Komplete Kaos Inc

Komplete Kaos Inc:
We are a Lego® Robotics Team of 10 to 12 year old's from the Wollongong region. Our names are Andrew, Harri, Jiah, Marnie, Matthew, Max and Nicola. We love robotics, Lego®, science, creative thinking, music, the environment, our community and having fun.
In 2013 we entered an international Lego® robotics competition called FIRST®Lego® League (FLL®) there are over 200 teams in Australia and 20,000 worldwide. The theme was Natures Fury. We worked hard in the lead up to the NSW competitions and we won the Championship Award. We then went on to compete at the Nationals held at Macquarie University on Dec 6. We came second overall and won the Research Award.
As a result of that achievement we have been invited to represent Australia and compete at the European Open FLL® Championships in Pamplona, Spain. It is a self funded activity AND that's where you come in. Please help take Komplete Kaos Inc to Spain! Olé!

What is Lego® Robotics / FIRST®Lego® League?
Lego Robotics involves learning engineering and computer programming to design, build, and program small-scale robots using MINDSTORMS® kits issued by Lego®. For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology (FIRST®) is a non-profit association founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. There are FIRST®Lego® League teams in over 70 countries worldwide.
FIRST® have a range of age-specific programs. FIRST®Lego® League is aimed to introduce younger students to real-world engineering and robotics challenges. The themes are designed to inspire interest in and creative contributions to society. Our project was how to best help people in times of floods.

The global FIRST®Lego® website* provides links to the global YouTube channel, separate country websites, and social networking channels.
Our teams award winning approach; FIRST® have four judging categories;
1 = Core Values
The team is judged throughout the competition and during a series of set tasks how they work as a team. How they treat other teams? Do they show Gracious Professionalism.
2 = Project Design
Every team chooses a problem to investigate and innovate an effective solution. As mentioned our team chose to investigate floods. They have worked hard to research, design and have (partially) developed a FLOOD SMART APP. This APP includes a social media campaign for all age groups, games, emergency transit information, SES warnings, facilitates contact while on the move and gives access to emergency services.
The New South Wales state headquarters of SES were so impressed they asked the kids to come in and work with them to get this APP off the ground and to assist the SES on their Tsunami Safe program.

3 = Robot Design and Robot Challenge
The team must design, build and program a robot that can complete a range of tasks on a ‘challenge board’. The team is able to pit itself against the clock and other teams to reach the highest possible score. That is not all though, they are also judged on mechanical design, strategy, innovation and programming solutions/skills.
4 = Spreading the Lego® Robotics Love
Our team is committed to assisting others in the our region. Team members are mentoring students at Sutherland public school, and at Lego® Robotics Camps. Their leadership and competition experience in Spain will help them gain confidence, credibility as trainers and a range of experience/ideas that will be able to be passed on to others in the community.

Meet The Komplete Kaos Inc Team

Marnie
Hi my name is Nicola but everyone calls me pickle. I am one of the only two girls in our Lego® robotics team. My main job is project, which I love, although I did write some of the code for the robot. I wrote the move forward to touch sensor piece. I love playing the flute, piano, hockey and of course with Lego®.

Nicola (AKA) Pickle
Hi I'm Matthew and I’m 10 years old. I love reading, playing my trumpet,spending time at the beach and doing lots of crazy science experiments.
I've been involved in Lego® Robotics for 1 year and since I've joined I've had an absolute blast!!!! I've met some great people and learnt some fantastic new skills, but above all I am part of a fantastic team who love having fun and lots of laughs.
Matthew
Hi my name is Max (AKA) Maximum Destruction, my Komplete Kaos Inc nickname, and I’m 11 years old. I love playing guitar, playing baseball and doing archery but most of all I love FIRST®Lego® League Robotics. My best ever commitment in life so far is being a Komplete Kaos Inc team member and entering the FIRST®Lego® League competition. It is also by far the most fun! Being apart of the Komplete Kaos Inc team has taught me so much about friendship and teamwork, it has also made me proud to be representing my country in an international competition.
My favourite subjects are science and technology and my favourite pastime when I have nothing else to do is playing computer games.
Max (AKA) Maximum Destruction
Hi I'm Andrew AKA Android. A few year or so ago I started FLL® and I loved it because it made learning fun. I love FLL because it incorporates some of my favourite things – maths, science, and technology, into a team sport, which I can do with my friends, and because it has Lego®. – Who doesn’t like Lego®?
After doing FLL® my grades and confidence have gone up and I got 4 Distinctions in the ICAS Primary School Competitions (Maths, English, Science and Computers). I have also been selected into a Yr 5 & 6 Opportunity Class. When I grow up I want to be a Palaeontologist but I also love working with computers.
By going to Spain, I hope to achieve a better understanding of different cultures around the world, learn how to make more friends and not be so shy, and have a better understanding of engineering, which I will share, with my friends and other Lego Robotics teams.
Andrew (AKA) Android
Hi I'm Jiah and I made the cool video at the beginning of this project. Three years ago I started Lego® robotics. It was the best thing I had ever done because it was fun and an unusual way to learn. Building with Lego® and using maths, science and technology has got to be the best thing ever.
After participating in FLL®, I have made it into a selective high school and have been getting good grades in the UNSW ICAS exams. I have also become a better speaker. Most importantly I have made friends that I will keep for life.
When I grow up I would like to be a tablet/computer designer or a software engineer.
By going to Spain I want to gain more knowledge about the cultures of the world by making friends from other countries who are interested in what I am, which is learning more about engineering and IT. I hope to make the most out of this opportunity which has been given to our Lego® robotics team, Komplete Kaos Inc.
Jiah
Hi, I am Harri. I am ten years old and I like computer games, playing my clarinet and playing with friends. I started Lego® robotics at the beginning of 2013. I really enjoy it. I like the building of the robots and learning how to program them with the rest of the team. If I had a robot I would program it to playfully chase the dog around the house.

Harri
Thank You to our Sponsors!

How The Funds Will Be Used
To take the team off the ground (so to speak) $14,000 would pay for the return flights and by raising $10,000 through this Pozible campaign it will contribute greatly towards those costs.

Small or big - your contributions will be greatly appreciated! The total cost for this event will be around $55,000 so if you can help us to reach our target this would be truly awesome. If our target could be surpassed then that again would be truly AWESOME? This would mean a lesser financial impact on the six families involved and in the meantime we will be working hard with our other fundraising activities such as, selling chocolates, hosting a community movie night, guessing competition etc to help the team to reach its goal.
Some of the other items that we need to pay for include but are not limited to:
- return flights for one adult per child ( Sydney - Madrid - Pamplona)
- comprehensive travel insurance for the team
- back up EV3 (robot) and spare parts
- specialised luggage (hard casing to protect our precious and delicate robots!), and transit costs
- design and print uniforms (to cover the whole 4 day competition), including a jacket and a hat for each team member and their guardians
- accommodation in Madrid for a Spanish school share and learn experience, 3 nights - accommodation in Madrid, 5 nights in Pamplona (competition is over 4 days 28 May to 31 May)
- meals
- costs relating to further developing our project in preparations for the international arena
- constructing the Flood Safe App
- and we are sure there will be more expenses that we have not thought of.
Ouch! It is expensive travelling and representing your country!

Thank you for your support in helping our team in achieving our dreams and to help us to further develop in the fields of science, technology, innovation, engineering and team work. I think we should also mention that this is a whole lot of "FUN" as well!!.
The Challenges
The risks are;
The Komplete Kaos Inc kids are young (ages 10-12) and will be travelling overseas to compete in a foreign country against the worlds best. This is a huge challenge; physically (travel sickness/jet lag,etc) logistically (even finding joint apartments etc), emotionally (managing expectations, competing against young adults in some cases, 18 years old along with their experience levels).
The competition itself will throw up challenges - our kids are learning that robotics is a precises and specialised field and they need to be prepare for all situations/possibilities.
The funds are a challenge as well. We are fully self funded. The kids come from three different public schools and do this as an after-school activity. as mentioned we have set our Pozible target at $10,000 and this amount will contribute greatly towards to the cost of the flights for each child. Each family will pay for a parent.

The time factor involved is short, we only have until mid May 2014 to make this dream a reality. However the Komplete Kaos Inc team has a never say never approach. This trip could be a life changing event for us and it will help to shape and influence our futures. Oh by the way there will be no running with the bulls this time around!
