PAW Media and Communications, the aboriginal creators of the 2001 cult ABC TV series “Bush Mechanics”, are producing a short claymation film based on the original show. Principal photography has been completed and now the film is entering the post-production phase. The claymation technique is a painstaking and meticulous process where clay models are crafted by hand and moved incrementally.

The images are photographed frame-by-frame and replayed sequentially at normal speed to produce the moving animation. Only a few seconds of animation can be acheived in a typical days production and so far it has taken just over a year to produce twelve minutes of animation.

Jason Japajarri Woods co-directs the film with Jonathan Daw. They collaborated most recently in 2012 on the award winning animated short film “Jack and Jones”.

"Bush Mechanic's" Animation follows the adventures of the bush mechanics driving over red dirt roads as the mischievous spirit “munga munga” pursues them. The story provides a candid glimpse into the culture and humour of the Warlpiri people of the Central Desert as they demonstrate the practical ingenuity that is required in keeping their vehicles running in such harsh conditions.

We need your help in funding the final post-production of the project to give it the necessary polish and professional finish that is required for presentation on an Australian television network such as ABC or NITV. It will also enable us to fund production of DVD media for distribution to remote aboriginal communities and local screenings of the film. The finished film will also be screened on ICTV via the VAST satellite system. It is important for the film to reach a wide audience and demonstrate that great work can be produced outside of the mainstream by a remote aboriginal organization.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The funds raised are budgeted to cover the costs of post-production and finishing the film to a broadcast quality standard. They will cover the production of original music score and sounds effects, final mix of sound, color correction and special visual effects, final editorial and titling. Also included in these costs will be DVD production and screenings for remote aboriginal communities in the PAW region of Central Australia.

The Challenges

PAW Media has a track-record of delivering productions on time and on budget over many decades. The film is already 95% complete and we need your help to finish the project to a standard that will do justice to the content. The hard part is done and whilst important the post-production process is relatively less time consuming than animation production.
