GAIA Dance Film

GAIA is a short dance film created by Adelaide based dancer Erin Fowler and filmmaker Nick Graalman. The film portrays Gaia (another name for Mother Earth) and her struggle for survival in an increasingly degraded and urbanised planet. Through the nonverbal language of dance, GAIA tells a universal and compelling story that is accessible and relevant across the globe.

Created by dancer Erin Fowler, and filmmaker Nick Graalman, the film began development in 2012 after the artists met at the Earth Station Festival – an offshoot of WOMADelaide Festival - that brought together the best of environmentally themed art and music, discussions and provocations. There, they discovered their shared concern for the environment and humanity’s place in it, and the seed for GAIA was planted.

Working with a small group of Adelaide based artists including composer Christopher Larkin, costume designer Olivia Freear and colourist, Chris Herzfeld – GAIA has been a labour of love for this creative team.
n 2012, GAIA received the Ausdance SA Choreolab Digital Award. This assisted them to shoot in many unique locations – including the stunning Lake Gairdner in remote South Australia where they spent 3 days shooting in searing 40-degree heat. The team also made use of Nick’s renowned timelapse photography, which is woven throughout the film, capturing the ever-changing landscape and cycles of our planet.

The official world premiere took place on May 3 rd at the unique surrounds of The Market Shed on Holland (Adelaide). It was a big focus of our Pozible campaign giving contributors a unique, one off, cinema experience (and some) as a thankyou for their generous support.
This is what people are saying about GAIA:
"Erin and Nick, your film treats a contentious subject with great respect. To covey a powerful message without a single word spoken is indeed a challenge. You did it superbly."
John Joseph
"Absolutely beautiful and moving. Remarkable work."
Matt Shilcock
"GAIA, wow! What an absolutely amazing, beautiful and inspiring film! Congrats!"
Jessie Goodwin

It's onto new rewards in the final week of our campaign. Please have a look in the right column for more goodies up for grabs.
The reality is that making films is EXPENSIVE. Even after you've made them. Especially if you want to do it right. Which we do because we have a really strong belief in this project. This Pozible campaign will help cover the costs of officially launching the film at the premiere screening and get GAIA on the film festival circuit.
