“The Tangible Tarkine Experience” is a dynamic audio-visual cinematic installation that combines technology and organic information for an innovative, completely immersive sensory experience for reception by all Australians.

By building a fleet of easy to move, multi-sensorial projection booths we will illuminate the superb beauty of Tasmania's Tarkine rainforest to the population of Australia in public spaces around the country.

Back in the 80s, Peter Dombrovski’s photo of the Franklin river mobilized an entire generation to stand up and speak out for the Franklin, successfully saving it from a hydroelectric dam. The same is possible for the Tarkine!!

The ultimate objective of “The Tangible Tarkine Experience” is to increase the public’s ability to perceive the incredible purity and extraordinary value of our virgin forest, while simultaneously gathering awareness for the region and the issues it is facing. Our project revolves around 5 multi-sensorial projection booths which showcase the beauty of the Tasmania's Tarkine rainforest in every major city of Australia.
The installation is planned to be exhibited in public spaces in Hobart, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, with additional locations and events considered in accordance to demand.

The master booth will be available for multi-sensorial immersive experiences at festivals and functions and will later incorporate natural sculptural pieces to artistically invoke the feeling of the rainforest even further.

Unique opportunities exist for corporate sponsorship deals to benefit from our high traffic public exposure.

We acknowledge that many urban demographics rarely engage with the most iconic of national treasures: our last remaining old growth forests. The Tangible Tarkine Experience intends to bridge this divide by constructing a completely immersive sensory experience. Combining exquisite visual footage, native in locus audio, olfactory stimuli (humid humus, essential oils), as well as tactile installations of foliage, stones, different woods and mosses. This unique project uses a mixture of technological and organic communication to extend peoples range of experience, naturally provoking and evoking an experience of awe, enjoyment and respect for this most precious of wild regions.

PUBLIC SPACES

The Tarkine Tangible project will construct an easy to erect, scalable, rectangular projection booth within which the sublime and magical environment of the Tarkine will be communicated through creative film, original soundscapes, breath taking stills, rainforest scents and tactile installations for exhibition in busy public spaces and selected events.

On all six planar surfaces of the booth the space will enchant its audience. The four walls and ceiling will be illuminated for visual immersion while the ground will project sound and contain isolated areas for olfactory and tactile sensory engagement. The booth will have a visual presence in the landscape of the city, as the multimedia projections become visible from outside the space at nighttime creating an engaging luminescence to attract and delight audiences.

Low Down on the Tarkine

Encompasing a unique Gondwanan relic of landscapes, the Tarkine harbors an extraordinary amount of ecological diversity including over 60 rare, threatened and endangered wildlife species. It is in fact the largest tract of cool temperate rainforest in Australia and the southern hemisphere. Covering 447,000 hectares in the north-west of Tasmania it is noted for its impressive beauty and diverse array of scenic landscapes; varying from ancient forests to huge sand dunes, sweeping beaches, rugged mountains and pristine river systems.

Australians have inherited the oldest continent on Earth and are therefore custodians of the planets oldest landscapes.

Significantly, the Tarkine is the very last strong hold of the only disease-free Tasmanian Devil population left in the wild. Furthermore, the Tarkine is also one of Australia’s and in truth the world’s most important regions for Aboriginal cultural heritage, sadly this heritage is largely unexplored and undocumented.

Our Contribution

The Tarkine has been chosen for this project after a profound personal experience in the Tarkine rainforest by the project director awoke the will to inspire this same emotion in the Australian public to recognise its unacknowledged National Heritage significance.

Aiming to present concerned citizens with options about how they can help contribute to the campaign to save the Tarkine and promote the work that is being done already to help protect the region, we are happy to acknowledge a working partnership organisations such as Save the Tarkine, The Bob Brown Foundation, The Wilderness Society, the Earth Repair Foundation, Eco Tourism Developers such as Tarkine Trails, Documentary Film Makers, independant Citizen Scientists and elements within the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.

We acknowledge an economic model created by the Cradle Coast Authority which states that the Tarkine and Tasmania can generate a significant income from tourism that would support a divestment from mining and logging whilst enjoying economic prosperity. We are doing our best to promote this reality and bring about this change by getting the majority of Australia onside. Read the Tarkine Tourism Development Strategy here.

The Tangible Tarkine experience is a complex, dynamic and ever evolving project which will present ongoing opportunities to Tasmanian and Australian film makers, photographers, speakers & educators, artists, sculptors and musicians for public exhibition.

The project will host a website ( http://spiralarchitect101.wix.com/tarkine ), currently in development which promotes affiliated projects and enterprises by generating web traffic through our organic exposure opportunities and channeling our hits into selected websites and businesses. We will also feature selected items in our online store to generate sales for sibling Environmental ventures.

The Tangible Tarkine currently requires sponsorship and offers you the opportunity to be part of a uniquely different experience in communicating and engaging the populous of Australia with the extraordinary values of environmental importance.

Most of the production has been funded by the filmmakers themselves (with time and labour being donated for free on 3 months worth of filming and interviews, travel, reasearch and editing)

We are just short of an amount that will enable us to go into production on our mainland tour and campaign with 5 edited videos on each rear-projected screen.

All the people involved in the Tangible Tarkine Experience thus far have said "yes", donating their time and energy to telling a great story.
By saying "yes" to making a contribution, you are:
- Giving yourself a warm and fuzzy feeling by helping someone
- Making a unique Australian film & experience
- Reaping various rewards on offer (see rewards on the side of this page)
- Helping us realise our dream
- Progressing our careers (it will lead to film festivals and more films..)
- Bringing a story on paper vividly to life
- Supporting independant filmmakers.

Documentary Filmmaker & Audio Visual Technician

Endorsement by Bob Brown, March, 2014:
"Dylan Wood's proposal to delight Australians in the big cities with the sights, sounds and scents of Tasmania's remote Tarkine coast and rainforest wilderness will do wonders for saving the threatened wilderness. When Australians got to see the Franklin River through film and photos thirty years ago, they voted to save it. The Tangible Tarkine Experience will use fabulous technology, not available back then, to bring the Tarkine alive in city squares across The nation. It is a superb idea. Please MAKE A SPECIAL DONATION to this bright, Tarkine-saving idea .... Dylan and his crew will do the rest!"

How The Funds Will Be Used

Initial funding will support the construction of 2 booths, one in Hobart and one in Melbourne which will then be used to generate exhibitions in other major Australian Cities.

Applications for Film Festivals & Public Installations including the Melbourne Environmental Film Festival and others, are a priority to fill out a schedule of installations throughout the year.

We have purposely kept our funding target low to make this campaign a reality. The target is set at the minimum required to engage towards building 5 simultaneous booths around Australia in 2014 as part of an awareness raising campaign for the Tarkine region.

Installations are planned for
Salamanca Arts Gallery
Melbourne Environmental Film Festival
Adelaide Street Art Exhibitions
Public Space exhibitions in Canberra & Sydney
& Other Events

Increased funding would also open the door to wider possibilities in the realms of public exposure and more advanced audio/visual experiences within better installations..

The Challenges

Most of the risks have already been taken while braving the elements in the forest! There has been many challenges along the way, but that's all part of the adventure. The visual effects (in post production) will be very labour-intensive and time consuming. voice over scripting, textures, synchronising 5 simultaneous videos and animations will need to come together to set our diorama into completion.
