THE PROJECT:
Sydney based filmmakers Erin Latimer and Justin Latimer started their production company Permanent Ink Pictures in early 2014, launching its first music video on March 1st. Since then, they've been working on The Crush Space, the company's first short film.

The Crush Space, written and directed by Erin Latimer, is a post-coming-of-age story about three siblings -- after moving out of home Laura, Patrick and Grace have realised that coming-of-age is not all it's cracked up to be. When a family wedding calls them back to the suburbs to visit their mother, all three of them have something to hide. Trapped in Laura's defaced car on the drive to the cousins', it's not a matter of if Helen will find out her kids' secrets, but when. A 20-minute comedy with a splash of drama about family trust and secrets, and how mothers always have one eye on the rear-view.

The Crush Space is a passion project at heart - Erin's favourite movies are about realistic, sincere characters and comedy that shines through raw and emotional honesty. The script was written with the audiences of Little Miss Sunshine, The Descendants, and Australian series The Moodys in mind.

The film aims to get Permanent Ink off the ground and into the spotlight. We plan to enter as many film festivals as we can so that everyone who worked on the film can be launched towards their next career goals.

The script is done. We have our cast. We have our crew. We have locations, equipment, and a schedule ready for our shoot in the last week of July. We have been working hard and preparing for months for this dream to come alive. Now all we need is your support!

Wait, so who are you guys?

Erin Latimer is the writer and director of The Crush Space, and Justin Latimer is the assistant director. You can scroll down for our current bios and previous work - but first, a bit of back story. Basically, we've been waiting out whole lives to bring our very own movies characters to the big screen. It's a dream we've had since we were kids. Seriously ... here's a montage of our lives spent as movie characters.

It all started in a muddy back yard in summer, in which Justin would direct Erin and their friends through incredibly detailed make-believe versions of Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and The Great Escape. Blood was shed, knees were green'd, and some of our best childhood memories were born. Movies were shaping our lives before we were big enough to see over the cinema seats.

This kind of imaginative play always resonated with Justin and inspired him to become a director. He has studied Screen Analysis, Photography and Studio Lighting and plans to attend film school in 2015 to further pursue his filmmaking goals.

Erin has been writing for years, and has recently moved from novel writing to screenwriting. She went to NIDA, TAFE, Sydney Film School and now UNSW to learn as much as possible about film. In the last two years she's worked on a bunch of film sets, gained lots of experience, and made her own projects. Now it's all coming together for one awesome little movie ... it's pretty exciting.

Have you got anyone else on board?

We've got lots of amazing people working with us to make The Crush Space happen, including Sound Recordist Luke Stacey, Production Designer Sara Glaoua, Costume Designer Kassandra Giotopoulos Moore, Focus Puller Julian Tynan, Producer Tere Latimer, and Editor Dru O'Meara. And here are the major players:

Hannah Klassek is the Director of Photography
Hannah Klassek lives, works and plays in Sydney, dedicating her time to working as a cinematographer. She specialises in short films and music videos, and constantly seeks out new and challenging projects to immerse herself in. She shot 'Hooks' by Daniel Tomalaris with Permanent Ink earlier this year. Taking pride in her lighting skills and technical knowledge, Hannah works with her keen interest in colours, lenses and techniques to make an image fitting for the occasion.

Emm Wiseman is 'Laura'
Emm Wiseman is a Theatre and Media graduate of Charles Sturt University. She has been involved in a range of theatre works including stage plays, mummery, street performance, on camera performance, physical theatre, circus, musical theatre and cabaret. Emm spent her first years at Charles Sturt primarily working on sound, set design, costume and makeup. Her fascination with performance then led to lead roles in original play "Reductio Ad", and devised comic cabaret "A World Without Sex" . As an emerging artist Emm is excited to expand her knowledge in performance and gain new skills towards future productions.

Jack Douglas is 'Patrick'
Jack Douglas started acting in the back yard as a kid, playing imaginary battles and recreating movie scenes. At school he naturally gravitated towards drama, with a first and memorable role of James in James and the Giant Peach, earning him high marks and hooking him for good on performing. In 2013 Jack appeared in two plays at Brisbane's Short and Sweet Festival and received a Best Actor award. After a two year acting course in Brisbane he has moved to Sydney for exciting new opportunities and experiences.
Bella Martin is 'Grace'
Bella Martin is an actress and dancer with experience from Brent Street Academy, NIDA and Screenwise. She has trained in a range of dances styles for over ten years including contemporary, jazz, hip hop and ballet, and has been acting since age 8. In 2013 she starred in the short film 'I Am Sienna', in the titular lead role. Her music video credits include Rufus' 'This Summer' and Daniel Tomalaris' 'Hooks' in 2014, making this her second collaboration with Permanent Ink Pictures.

Gisèle Scales is 'Helen'
Gisèle Scales is a musicianactress, broadcaster & presenter, happily dividing her time between recording sessions or live performances on her electric violin, producing & presenting the Qantas Concert Hall program, acting on stage & in film & TV, and marketing her solo album of violin infused electro rock pop with multilingual vocals. Gisèle’s acting experience includes Felice in Kafka’s The Judgment, guest on ABC TV Art Nation & TV commercials. Her music credits include Midnight Oil, Eurogliders, Jeannie Lewis & the European No.1 single “Mother Egypt” by Vega. Radio includes BBC World Service & throughout the ABC Radio network. Gisèle is thrilled to play Helen in The Crush Space.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Thanks to the success of our music video and some scrimping and saving, we've already got $2,000 set aside for the budget.

However, filmmaking is a hugely collaborative art form and requires many people and things to happen, and that includes you!

The minimum cost for this film is at least $6,000. This money will cover:

- Quality equipment rental, including sound gear, a camera, lenses, tripods, and rigs.
- Lights, reflectors and blacks to control all the lighting on set, indoors and outdoors.
- Production design expenses, including props, costumes, makeup, and hair styling.
- Food and travel costs. Our budget is tiny so all of the cast and crew are working for free. Since we can't afford to pay them, the least we can do is give them food for 4 days' filming and cover their travel expenses to and from set.
- Post Production coverage, including editing, sound mixing, and composing.
- Not to mention some insurance! We want to do things safely.

We've got our budget carefully mapped out, but all of the costs are spread thin - so we're super grateful for anything you can do to help make this film the best it can be!

The Challenges

Being a new and independent production company, one major challenge is finding ways to get our work out there. Thankfully, we have been blessed with a group of incredible people who are giving  their time and effort for the film, so we are all working together to make each other's dreams happen.

We want to make a story that people can relate to. This is a situation that you've been in before - these characters could be your family. We understand the hilarity of just being honest and hope that this film shows everyone's true colours in a believable way.

That is our biggest challenge: make something that resonates with our audience and sticks with them for a long time. So we're presenting ourselves to you from start to finish - our goal is to connect with you as an audience member and give you a film that you can be proud of, because we think there's something in it for everyone.
