Immersion is a tragic family drama that deals with terminal illness, and the contentious issue of voluntary euthanasia, and family relationships. It explores how family members must accept the impending death of a loved one; whether extending their suffering is really the right thing, and whose choice it is to make that call.

The film follows the journey of confident and composed photographer, Eva, as she slowly realises that her efforts in keeping her terminally ill father alive, may not be the right thing to do - for either of them. It is a painful journey for both Eva and her father Paul, but in the end something - someone - must give.

My aim with this film is to be able to take it to film festivals and make an impact on audience, by bringing an issue of human rights that I am passionate about to the forefront of people's minds through a cinematic medium. In keeping with this vision, although Immersion is family drama, this film has the unique element of the crucial moment taking place underwater. A poetic and beautifully tragic scene, these moments will be captured in the most cinematic way possible.

Films that are greatly inspiring to me include Seven Pounds, 50/50 and the recently released The Fault In Our Stars. These films hold strong themes and capture the tone that I aim to create and have influenced the not only the scripting process, but the style and colour schemes that have been considered for Immersion.

The Hours, by Michael Cunningham, and also the movie adaptation of the novel have also been of great influence. The poetic and tragically haunting beauty of the river scenes are vivid, and have had the most impact on my vision for the portrayal of the character's stories. For the underwater scene, my inspiration comes from renowned photographer Elena Kalis.

Immersion is a film I believe will make a difference and touch hearts. I'm passionate to do such a sensitive and personal issue justice. The target I've posted is the absolute minimum goal, and every little contribution is greatly appreciated. Help make my passion reality!

How The Funds Will Be Used

Funds raised will be used predominantly for production design and location fees. A portion will also be contributed towards camera department requirements (for the underwater shoot and extras Flinders Uni equipment store does not provide).
Production design department is required to print quality portraits for an art gallery scene. The main character has an exhibition of her photography works, setting up not only who she is, but also bringing into play one of the conflicts in the plot. Quality photo prints on canvas or the like are required, also wire, frames and wooden planks to construct hanging space in the gallery. For this space, small directional lights will also be required. An inspiration image is below. An idea to use old wooden ladders as the end pieces to hang canvases in between or on is also being considered.
Key props, such as a wheelchair, medical equipment and antique photography cameras are also required and are likely to come at a cost.

The Challenges

The challenge for this film is doing the subject matter justice. Production design is essential in being able to achieve the quality needed for this film to bring the character's stories to life, into the intense reality of the real world of terminal illness. As well as this, equipment required to create the warmth and look of the overall film will have to be cut if funds are not raised. It is my intention to bring such a sensitive subject into discussion and consideration. It must be done in a cinematic and beautiful way to allow audience to process and comprehend the weight and feelings of such a matter without feeling too overwhelmed. The aim is to deepen understanding and touch lives.
