The Sandfly Circus has put on much loved productions since 2007, with each year working towards increasing performers’ skills and the show’s production values. We aim to continue creating high quality entertainment for the community, however our primary aim is to continue to offer our youth participants the opportunity to gain the valuable skills of team work, confidence building and increased physical skills. We rely on a supportive community to bring these productions to life.


The concept for “Out of this World” was developed by our youth mentoree team, consisting of Madhavi Hunt, Jake Handscombe, and Hayley Tucker. Since a lot of circus skills involve movement off the ground and through the space around us, outer space as a theme seemed like a natural fit. Additionally, our fascination with the components of outer space seemed like good fodder for a creative production – who wouldn’t want to explore asteroids, alien worlds, and the rings of Saturn after all!


This year’s production has a crackerjack team working hard to make an exciting and dynamic show for the Broome community. Kate Reid, head trainer and rigger extraordinaire, is joining forces with Meredith Bell, Sandfly Coordinator and last year’s director, in mentoring three of our experienced young Sandfly performers in writing, choreographing and directing this circus theatre spectacular. Additionally, we are delighted to have Joey Ruigrok van der Werven on board - celebrated designer and inventor of great stuff . He will help local set and prop expert Chris Hill create a dynamic concept of outer space in our indoor performance space. We’ll add to this some crazy lighting, space ships, and bands of extraterrestrial life, for a show like you’ve never seen!

The money raised by this campaign will go towards helping pay for professional artists who are working on the project, as well as props creation and some venue hire.

Professional Artists involved in the show include: Kate Reid, Meredith Bell and Joey Ruigrok van der Werven. They have been developing the show with our mentor-ee teens since May and will work full time starting a month before the show.

The venue space hired will be the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre. We will need venue hire time to bump in, tech run and run the show for 2 nights. This will be four days of hire for the space, which runs at several hundred dollars a day. We also have to hire the venue for many extra rehearsals during August and September to refine the multitude of routines these kids will perform in the show.

Chris Hill is the props creator.  He has done all of Theatre Kimberleys props for shows over the past decade.  This year Joey van der Werven (of Marrugeku, Legs on the Wall, Dogtroep, etc) will join Chris to help us transform the mundane space of our basketball court training space into a cosmic wonderland. Thru unusual lighting and some exciting props and sets, these two will delight you with their creations, but they need materials and time to make the vision of "Out of this World" a reality.
