Accidental Discharge began at the beginning of this year, when I realised I needed something more in my life than the unsatisfactory amount of anger and sadness due to the inequality that we still face in our modern world. I began exploring the ideas based around stereotypes of feminism and the way in which we perceive one another through social media. I discovered that so many other teenage girls had so much to say on how they felt about how they were viewed, how they were judged and how they felt they didn't have something (like a magazine) to look at and to connect too. These comments sparked a little idea into my mind. What if there was a magazine, a little creative space for girls (especially young girls) to go to so that they could feel comfortable and grow into their own skin. And what if this space supported their beliefs, didn't shame girls, didn't turn away in disgust at periods and didn't mind if there was a bit of hair growing on their legs.
So, together with an amazing bunch of girls from around Australia, we began Accidental Discharge.

I hope that through this magazine, the girls and I have been able to convey the message of friendship, sisterhood and feminism. Capturing and hearing many stories of what being a 'woman' means, what 'beauty' means and what true friendship between two girls stands for has been a thrilling experience, and I am now so happy that we have the chance to share it with you!
Through the creating process, it has always felt really important to me to not ever let this magazine seem superficial. I want you to be able to enjoy reading and feel like you have a community of girls that ALL experience and go through the same/similar things.
With articles from Elfy Scott, Scarlett Stevens (of San Cisco), Chloe Nour, Tsuno, No Frills, Lina Esco of Free the Nipple and plenty more, we hope that you will enjoy reading and exploring this creation, it was made with you all mind!

A bit about Maile
The first thing you would probably find interesting about me is my name is actually pronounced my-lee (yeah, I can see you all before this going, May le? Male?) and I just celebrated my 18th birthday (yay!)
I am currently completing my last year at a Steiner School, where I get to decide on a project to complete through the course of the year, rather than sit general W.A.C.E
I took this opportunity to create something that could maybe (hopefully!) benefit the world - because in my head I thought, why waste a perfectly wonderful year for making a change?
With this thought in mind, I brain stormed on what I felt was really important to me. There were way to many things I was wanting to do though- Veganism, Consumerism, Feminism, Environmental laws, human rights, rape culture, sex trade..I gave up, so me and my friend decided we should just transform into beautiful mermaids and live the rest of our lives pretending the rest of the world didn't exist, unfortunately that didn't go as well as we planned...(exhibit A)

Then i watched this incredible talk,
(YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS) ..It's by a girl my age, called Tavi Gevinson (who runs Rookie Mag, for all you Rookies) and she is someone I absolutely look up to. This video (and her in general) gave me so much inspiration and courage to get through my teen years (a process I am still undergoing).. And it was this short 20 minute video, that made me realise I could be anything I wanted, and still be figuring it out.
It was with this advice in mind that I began holding talks for girls between 15-18 on Feminism, 3rd wave feminism, Hair removal, Periods, Over sexualisation of girls in media, Body image and how we can learn to own our sexulaity. I spoke in Perth with both girls and boys and then flew to Melbourne where I hosted similar talks at a few schools over there. With positive outcomes and discussions in all talks, I decided crafting a magazine that aimed to be just like those talks was something I just had to do, after releasing how much everyone connected with what I was saying.
So I contacted Gemma,
(Her artwork is featured through the entire magazine, PLEASE also check out her website, her love and passion towards the arts is so inspiring and I am in awe by this beautiful women.

So with all of this going on, in an already hectic and confused 17 year old brain, I started this wonderful magazine. It's aimed for every girl who wants something to connect to, more than just what the latest trends will be, or how to get the perfect skin or talk to your crush (something I should probably learn to do actually).
So, that's probably the gist of me..through this experience I have met the most incredible people and have learnt the most beautiful lessons. This magazine is really important to me, I want you all to be able to make a connection with it and to understand just what it is like to grow up as a girl. I hope you enjoy!
