What takes your mind off your troubles? Dancing?  Eating?  Singing?

The latter definitely does the trick for the Starlight Hotel Choir.  The choir is composed of homeless people, or those at risk of homelessness.

The choir was formed by two musicians, Dave Johnson and Peter Anthony back in 2007.

“When the choir first started out, I asked a young guy where he was staying that night," says Dave.  "He waved a gesture at the sky and said, “the starlight hotel” – and the name stuck! It reflects sleeping rough, under the stars, no roof above your head and we all think about this guy and our meaning on a regular basis.”

The choir began as a fun workshop for the clients of St. Patrick's Community Support Centre.  These days they give regular performances at community events and get together on a weekly basis to rehearse.

St. Patrick's CEO Steve McDermott says the choir provides tangible mental health benefits to all involved. "Our emphasis at St. Pat’s is to promote sustainable, meaningful change in the lives of others. We do this by providing accommodation, health services and emergency assistance but we also do this by providing recreational opportunities like the choir. You just can’t overstate the value of coming together and forgetting about your worries for a spell.”

The Starlight Hotel Choir has already recorded one CD and now they're heading into the studio to do another.

This is joyful and meaningful project - but we need your help to get to the next step!

How The Funds Will Be Used

All funds raised will be used to fund the recording and creation of the CD.

All donors are very welcome to attend the launch of the CD, hot off the presses in early 2015.

The choir members are SO keen to see this happen - please, give us a hand!

The manufacturing of 500 CDs will cost $2000.
The mastering of the CD will cost $1500.

St. Patrick's Community Support Centre has over 40 years experience in providing a broad range of services to the homeless and those at-risk of homelessness. As well as service provision, the organisation aims to advocate for the homeless and to educate the public about the reasons for increasing rates of homelessness.  The work of the choir is a terrific help to us as we advocate for WA's most vulnerable.

The Challenges

It would be wonderful to have the money to produce a detailed booklet that tells the stories of the choir members.

It's vital that the broader community realize that homelessness can happen to anyone, at any time. An unpaid bill, a rise in rent, a lost job. All of these very ordinary events can lead to homelessness.

The booklet would tell these stories.

But...we may not have the money to do this, in which case we will produce a slim, less detailed version.
