Depression: it's a downer, isn't it? With over one million Australians living with depression each year, most of us know someone touched by this illness - if we haven't experienced it ourselves.

Hi! I'm Catie Morrison.

I'm interested in helping fellow Australians improve their quality of life while they're still depressed, instead of waiting until they're "better". There's a good body of research behind this notion, so good that I'm starting a social enterprise to help more people have access to it.

The concept? An online gift store will subsidize services for people living with depression. My first goal is to run community-based education courses, and my dream is to expand the range of services offered, down the track.

More about the rewards

The Joy Journal is a little book to help nurture your joy. At a convenient A5 size, you can carry it with you, capturing joyful moments as they occur, or you can use the journal prompts and quotes scattered through the 62 pages as writing guides to explore various aspects of joy in your past, present and future.

The Strength Book challenges cultural norms about strength. Using ten metaphors drawn from nature, The Strength Book is an A5, 62-page journalling resource which offers a space to explore the strengths you already possess and strengths you'd like to cultivate in your everyday living.

The reward price for both The Joy Journal and The Strength Book includes postage for these paperbacks to any destination in the world. INSIDER'S TIP: Choose any book or book combo reward, and your package will arrive with a little something extra!

How The Funds Will Be Used

I'm running this Pozible campaign because I want to start my social enterprise with a bang, not a whimper. I want to run the first of the community-based education courses in early 2015. I aim to keep the costs to participants as low as possible, so I want funds from this campaign to help me finalize the research and curriculum design, and cover advertising and room rental costs. Participants will still pay a small amount to cover the costs of materials and incidentals, partly to help the course go ahead, and partly because people tend to value something they pay even a small amount for over a freebie.

I also want to expand the range of goods I am offering in the online store. After all, the greater the range of goods, the more revenue will be raised, and the more subsidized courses can be run!

Here's a quick breakdown of how the funds will be used:

Research and finalizing curriculum design - $2,500
Advertising and room hire for the first course - $4,000
Increasing range of products available in the online store - $2,500
Advertising the online store - $1,000

Any funds raised beyond the $10,000 target will be split between subsidizing the next course and further increasing the range offered in the online store.

The Challenges

The major challenge I face at this stage is kickstarting this social enterprise with a very limited initial promotional budget. I have a promotional plan to address this, but would also appreciate you spreading the word among your friends and networks, if you believe this is a project worth achieving!

You can do this by:
- liking, and inviting your friends to like, the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/doingdefiesdepression
- following @dd_depression on Twitter, and tweeting something like "Please join me in supporting the social enterprise Doing Defies Depression! @dd_depression #dd_depression" or even "I've started Xmas shopping at the social enterprise Doing Defies Depression! @dd_depression #dd_depression"

I also have a thorough business plan which I've developed along with a mentor from Small Business Victoria. Believe me, he asked me so many "hard" questions - and made so many innovative suggestions - that I believe this business plan is pretty good.
