In the name of charity and adventure, team WildJunket Wheelies - Nellie, Alberto and Ivar - is racing across India on a tuktuk to raise funds for charity. The  Rickshaw Run is a 3,500km pan-India rally on a three-wheeled motorized rickshaw running at a whopping seven horsepower. There is no set route, no back-up, no support and no way of knowing if we're going to make it. We’ve got no mechanical knowledge and we’ve never driven a rickshaw — so the only certainty is that we will get lost, we will get stuck and we will break down.

We’ll be starting the rally in Cochin, Kerala on the southern part of India, and driving up India’s west coast to reach Jaisalmer, Rajasthan in northern India two weeks later (hopefully!). Along the way, we will probably pass through the beautiful beaches of Goa, the mountains of Nasik, the chaos of Mumbai, and many other parts of India that we have never even heard of.

Why are we doing this? We love a good adventure and we can’t think of anything more exciting than driving through mad-chaotic India on a tiny tuktuk. But we also strongly believe in the positive impact of tourism and giving back to local communities. We want to contribute directly to the communities of India, and also raise funds to help them on a deeper level. India is home to a third of the world’s poorest community, with climate change hitting them the hardest. Unprecedented heat waves, cyclones and floods are already displacing thousands of families.

WE ARE RAISING FUNDS FOR CHARITY. THEY ARE NOT FOR OUR PERSONAL USE!

How The Funds Will Be Used

In order to participate in the Rickshaw Run, we must first raise a minimum of $1,700 for the authorized Cool Earth charity. But we want to do more. Our fundraising goal is $4,000! $1,000 will go towards The Adventurists’ selected charity, Cool Earth, and the rest will go towards the non-profit close to our heart, Planeterra.

THE FUNDS RAISED WILL ONLY BE TRANSMITTED TO THE CHARITIES IF WE REACH THE GOAL, SO PLEASE DONATE!

Cool Earth: Saving Rainforests

The Adventurists’ selected charity,  Cool Earth, works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction. By building better incomes, schools and clinics, they give their partner villages the resources they need to keep their forest intact. To date, they have saved 411,525 acres of forests and supported over 35,410 indigenous people.

Planeterra: Empowering Local People

Planeterra is a non-profit organization that helps empower local people to develop their communities, conserve their environment and provide solutions to local problems. It was founded by G Adventures’ founder, Bruce Poon Tip. We’ve traveled with G Adventures several times and we have the utmost respect for the company.

The Challenges

It's not just bad roads and bad vehicles which make the Rickshaw Run ridiculous, there is also the traffic to contend with. There are 140 million vehicles in India and also 45 million cows and 30,000 elephants to contend with.  There’ll be plenty of challenges heading our way — but this is surely going to be one hell of an adventure AND it’s all for a good cause!
