We've created a film about Men At Work, their hit single Down Under, and the Kookaburra controversy. If you didn't know, the band were sued for copyright infringement and were facing the label of plagiarists, 35 years after their success.

We've spent the past year interviewing three members of Men At Work, cultural icons of Melbourne, Lawyers, academics and musicians about this case. I have edited the film into a succinct, thought provoking, tragic and entertaining 28 minute documentary.

The Story reveals the organic development of the song Down Under, it explores the songs commercial success, its cultural significance. And the the film dives into the case, asking questions about the relationship between art and law, influence and copyright.

The following stills are examples of Alice Stephens' cinematography throughout the film.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The film itself is 95% complete. The entire story has been captured and edited into a succinct storyline. Everyone who helped make this film was volunteering their time and energy and we managed to make this with our own savings. We were in our final year of studying film at Swinburne University and made the most of the incredible access to equipment and support.

Animations : $2,500

Use of Copyrighted Material:  $5,450

Entry into Film Festivals: $1000

Website Construction: $400

1. Animations

The only creative process left for this film are some animations. Using transcripts from the trial, we re-enacted some key moments of the case with professional actors. Now we'd like to animate these sequences, in a style similar to the film Waking Life. This will be incredibly time consuming for an animator and will require payment.

2. Copyright Licenses.

Within the film there are sequences which use footage that does not belong to me. Newscasts of the case, Newscasts of Greg's death, Spicks and Specks etc. These cost quite a lot to include within my film. A Melbourne lawyer Shaun Miller is volunteering his time to achieve licensing this material.

3. Payment

All the following people are artistic friends of mine who are studying, or fresh out of uni, and have day jobs working outside of creative industries. They happily found time to work on my film. I think it's only right that they are paid for their outstanding efforts.

Troy Mauri has spent many hours perfecting the sound of this film.

Alex Jennings found time in his schedule to create a logo, titles, posters and a dvd cover.

Theodosios Pandolas has green-screened the newscasts onto footage of vintage televisions.

Greer Forrester has Color Graded the film, giving it a unified look.

Alice Stephens, Cam Stewart and Georgia Gardener are crew members who all contributed money from their savings to pay for costs which we incurred along the way.

4. Film Festivals.

Film festivals charge an entry fee, often upward of $60. This fee does not guarantee the film will be shown within the festival, it only guarantees that the people organising the festival will watch the film and consider it. I would like to send this film to as many film festivals as possible.

5. Website

Youbettertakecover.com is coming soon

A place to follow updates of the film's progress.

Find out where the film will be screened at film festivals

And eventually buy the DVD
