The album "Trigger" is a collaboration between innovative double bass player/composer Robert Davidson and myself as a singer and lyricist.

This project combines Robert and my artistic and personal influences; Robert’s background in innovative art making and contemporary classical music and my fire for honest song-writing and performing have led us to find kindred creative compatibility together despite our differences. And that's an exciting thing!

The only problem is that Rob plays nearly every instrument - he could basically be a one man band!
We (Robert and Alice) have been working with musicians and sound artists to bridge genres and musical cultures for a common idea and album. It features Cye Wood - Violin, Ma Ya Ga Ng Gr Ne - drone and noise, Daniel Ogilvie - drums, Sam Mitchell - drums, Graham Ritchie - electric bass and synths, Thomas Green - electronic found sound, David Weir - harmony vocals and the choir! Produced by Liam Malby (what a rad fella!), Alice Night and Robert Davidson.

Cye Wood offered his incredible gift of violin playing to the album - Cye and the Violin are like soul mates from another life reunited in this one as man and instrument...

These little characters feature in the video clip for the song "I'd do it all again" in which the lyrics summarise the darkest times of a relationship breakdown and the ultimate conclusion that despite the unravelling, I hold no regrets. 

Half of the album songs were written in New York last year on a musical adventure that I embarked upon while liaising with Robert in Australia... This is the view from the Manhattan studio I was composing in in 2014...

Overstaying my time in cafes at Bedford Ave, cramming myself and my guitar into little booths after having purchased the cheapest thing on the menu, and listening to records up late with music lovers whom the universe planned my meeting with.

After returning to Australia Robert and began working with producer/(sea captain ; ) Liam Malby on the recording of the album. This partnership has shown me the importance of a creative connection between artists and producer. Liam has not ceased to amaze and inspire me throughout the entire process of this recording project. I look forward to working with Liam again and again! 

The handsome album choir - a delightful combination of friendships and artists! The live performances Robert and I prepare to launch the album this year will feature choir sections, sound art, electronic and live rhythm sections, double bass, keys and as often as possible grand piano.

The title of the album "Trigger" expresses the the destructive nature of unhealthy relationships but also has multiple meanings looking at our culture's role in cultivating our insecurities for the sake of consumerism. "Culture how could you" is the lyric that best expresses this move from disappointment in another to deep disappointment in culture itself. The songs that feature on "Trigger" explore change, loss, potential, nature and metropolis. 

My favourite moment in the recording process was when Brisbane artist Ma Ya Ga Ng Gr Ne arrived at the University of Queensland (where Robert runs the school of music) with hands full of old suitcases and amps to create distorted noise, drone and primal vocal expression onto the album. The scene felt as though we were bridging worlds often separated from each other and finding a place where classical music, folk motif, electronic sound, raw vocal expression and story could come together. The mix may have seemed odd at times from the outside but we are convinced that it has worked. 

Underpinning our body of work and song is honest narrative, verbatim lyric creation, experimentation, beauty, vulnerability and critical reflection. The sounds themselves are both dark and daring but framed by the beauty of piano and voice. 
The songs ask for engagement in significant cultural experiences such as body image issues, social norms, the manipulation of peoples minds by consumerism and the like, the innocence of childhood, and the role of the natural world in connecting us to who we are.

There is a lot to feel within the songs, multi layered meaning and rich expression, it is my hope that the album and the live shows will encourage honesty, and also allow audiences to look at the ways that our culture does not always support us, and ways that we can instead support each other, thus recreating culture. A culture where community can come together in diversity, where beauty is wild and artists are active!

We have already recorded and mixed all of the soundscape adventures that make this album, twelve songs are ready to go but I am in a week to week hand to mouth stage of my artistic career (which is all part of it) and cannot actually afford to master and press it!
In creating this campaign it is my hope that the rewards that you would get in exchange for your contribution are things you wil love! like the album itself, singing lessons, innovative merch, and the like.

Alice Night sings with empowered fragility, weaving strength and tenderness into her music. Alice is most noted for the richness and breadth of her voice; her courageous stage presence; and her unique, bold and poetic lyrics. “The tone to Alice Night's voice is just irresistible.” Dave Ruby Howe - Triple J Unearthed. Robert Davisdon is a prolific composer, bassist, lecturer and founder and artistic director of Topology. Davidson’s compositions are regularly performed, recorded and broadcast around the world by artists including The Brodsky Quartet (London), Newspeak (New York), Daniel Rowland (Amsterdam) and many others. This unlikely duo create unique and heart sourced compositions bridging folk and classical approaches. After working together in 2014 as part of a mentorship with the Australia Council for the Arts, Robert and Alice have written an album together “Trigger” (set for release in 2015). Their songs explore the nature of the city following Alice’s pilgrimage to New York; the human emotional landscape; disappointment and transformation; and also nature spaces inspired by time spent in Northern New South Wales. Robert and Alice write and perform with an authenticity that is palpable.

-Maybe not everyone has a record player (hang on I don't even have a record player!) - I will get a piggy bank just to save up for a record player and then get one... and until then I will visit friends with record players (and include a digital download with the vinyl). Also that is what the little book is for, something tangible to accompany the digital download for those who do not want the vinyl. 

-Also after creating an album it's really important that people actually get a chance to hear it and are drawn to coming to the live shows so I am hoping that word of mouth will spread news of this project as well as marketing strategies from our end.

-Funding - we are also applying for Australia Council for the Arts grants to tour the album in 2015/2016.
