James' beautiful ex-girlfriend Lola visits him searching for a missing book of Pablo Neruda poems. Despite his housemate Lou’s best efforts, James decides to take a chance on 'true love' and convince Lola that they’re meant to be together.

The film will be filled with symbolism and motifs, drawn from the richly established genre of magic realism.

Bright, graphic images, like a whole cooked fish that Lou makes for James, make striking set pieces and feed into the design.

The film is set in a townhouse in contemporary Melbourne, but reflects the old world of classic magic realist texts.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Magic realism, a genre explored in modern films like Amelie, relies on the story’s ability to turn the everyday into something magical. Our film relies on our ability to surprise with moments of magical beauty- not only through story, but art direction, costume, and musical score- and any contribution to our budget will be directly supporting our means to do this.

The funds will be put towards securing locations and permits, sourcing props and costumes- building some of the more complicated ones- and taking care of all the professionals who are donating their time and expertise on the long days of shooting that will make this film come to life.

Breakdown:
$500 equipment
$800 location
$2800 props and set design
$400 transport
$500 catering for 11 volunteering crew and cast

The Challenges

A film with such a specific style faces a challenge in integrating the vision inherent in the writing into the aural and visual style of the film. We have a great team assembled already, and we're united by our love of the magic realism style.

Once the shooting of the film is complete, the single biggest challenge we face is finding an audience for this work. Our producer, Mariani Vermeend, is working hard at distributing the film as successfully as possible.
