JUNK is an Australian student short film with post-apocalyptic, sci-fi flavour told from the eyes of a lone young woman. We’re an independent crew of young, aspiring filmmakers who need your help to get our short experimental graduate film into production!

It’s a unique, intimate female-centric tale about an introspective artist named Ash who lives alone in what seems to be an abandoned city. The film thematically explores the personal costs of her isolating pursuit of truth and identity.

An eccentric young artist, named Ash, battles with solitude after the world she once knew has retreated into a technologically manufactured existence.

As mentioned, we’re a rag-tag team of young Sydney film students currently finishing our studies at JMC Academy. We’re all movie-fanatics and have pooled our diverse skill sets and storytelling sensibilities together to tell this visually textured and intimately rich story. Read on to meet the energetic team!

WRITER / DIRECTOR: EMILY STOKES
Emily is a creative filmmaker with a passion for the arts and philosophy. During her time at JMC Academy, she has developed her writing and directing skills on various projects including 'Rough' (2013), a short documentary on homelessness and her short film 'Out of the Blue' (2014). Her fascination with urban decay and concern for society's growing technological dependence is what inspired the conceptualisation of 'Junk' (2015).

PRODUCER / 1st AD: JAMIE PASCOE
With high attention for detail, Jamie is a JMC Academy film student who is passionate for all aspects of cinema. Junk will be Jamie’s third producing endeavour, having previously produced the short films 'Goodbye My Love' (2014) and 'Coco-Nuts' (2015). When not busily infusing film productions with his infectious enthusiasm, he can be found dabbling in screen acting and even stop-motion animation as well as pursuing his passion of writing and directing.

CINEMATOGRAPHER: DAVID MINH-TAM NGUYEN
David is a filmmaker who specialises in cinematography, having recently been selected as a Finalist in the 2015 WaterAid Sh2orts competition. His filming and editing skills have also serviced the pre-production action design of the Hong Kong film 'Fist of the Dragon' (2014) and the ABC2 series 'Maximum Choppage' (2015). He has also produced corporate videography work under Vantage Films. Watch David's Showreel here: https://vimeo.com/126102905

COLOUR GRADER / STILLS PHOTOGRAPHER: RYAN ROWSELL
A striving perfectionist, Ryan is an aspiring filmmaker and keen student studying at JMC Academy. With cinematography experience on several productions made while at the Academy, his keen visual eye has also drawn him to develop a strong interest with post-production colour correction/grading. In a few months time, he’ll be meticulously applying the finishing visual touches to 'Junk' (2015).

COMPOSER / SOUND RECORDIST: EMILY LEVELLE
Over the past two years, Emily has excitedly worked on a number of short film projects and has also branched out into the games industry. Born and raised in America, Emily moved overseas to Australia to follow her life's passion and to study audio engineering at JMC Academy. Eager to showcase her diverse musical talents, Emily will be infusing 'Junk' (2015) with a unique and rich soundscape. Listen to Emily's work here: https://soundcloud.com/emily-levelle

How The Funds Will Be Used

Making films – even a short one – can be an expensive endeavour.

Some of the larger scale short film projects out there can easily cost upwards of $50,000, however OUR TARGET GOAL IS JUST $1,200.

We’ve carefully budgeted our projected expenses and have concluded that this is the safe minimum we need to fully realise the film.

Our MAIN EXPENSE will be securing THREE LOCATIONS that are paramount to the story of the film. These visually-striking locations include:

Your generous pledges will go a long way in helping us to cover the fees to shoot in these locations and we would eternally appreciate any help.

We'll be hustling hard to secure the most stunning backdrops we can find at the best prices in order to imbue the world of our film with the texture, grit and beautifully grungy aesthetic we're envisioning.

By pledging to our campaign, you’ll not only be receiving some awesome rewards and aiding an independent short film, you’ll also be helping us young filmmakers in a much deeper way than you'd probably realise.

The path into the creative industries is fraught with obstacles and it's often a lonely, challenging road BUT by supporting our film, you'd be giving us the most kick-ass gift of all: your belief in us.

In all seriousness, your support is a vote of confidence in us - and the value of that shouldn't be underestimated.

Each and every pledge will be a push of encouragement fueling us and inspiring us to not just make the best film possible, but to become the best artists we can be - and we wouldn't ever be able to thank you enough for that.

And if you can’t afford to pledge any money, don’t fret! You can still help us out immensely by SHARING THE CAMPAIGN on Facebook or other social media platforms.

For your generous contribution to our film, we'd be delighted to thank you with a nifty assortment of unique 'Junk'-related rewards, some of which can be seen below.

For more details on the rewards on offer, please look to the right-hand side of the page. There’s some pretty cool things up for grabs so please take your time browsing.

Above is an example of the $20 "ON-SET PERSONAL THANKS!" Reward: where we take the usual Thank You Shout Out a step further and onto the actual film set! Right before we slate a take, we'll give you a roaring shout out and share the video clip on our Facebook page to let the world know of your awesome contribution to our film! PLUS this Pledge comes with 2 other Rewards: an INVITATION to our Sydney premiere night and EARLY ACCESS to our online behind-the-scenes production videos!

Above is an example of the $35 "COLLECT YOUR JUNK ART!" Reward: a quick caricature sketch time-lapse video + jpeg file from Cinematographer David Minh-Tam Nguyen, in which YOU are rendered as a CHARACTER set in the seemingly post-apocalyptic world of 'Junk'! This $35 Pledge also comes with 3 other sweet Rewards!

Above is what you get in the $75 "EXCLUSIVE DVD + ART PACK!" Reward: one of those two rockin' A4 sized digital concept art prints illustrated by artist Kevin Tran, alongside an EXCLUSIVE DVD COPY + HD DIGITAL DOWNLOAD of the film, having your NAME appear in the CREDITS with a special thanks PLUS 4 other awesome Rewards!

Above is an early example of what you get as part of the $100 "SERGEANT SCRAPS!" Pledge: a lovingly hand-made piece of 'Junk'-inspired Jewelry specially made for you by our Writer/Director Emily Stokes. It also comes with another WHOPPING 9 Rewards! These include: a signed CONCEPT ART print, your NAME in the CREDITS, a very specially PERSONALISED pdf copy of the SCRIPT, ACCESS to originally composed MUSIC by composer Emily Levelle, and MORE!

NOTE: all physical rewards can be picked up on the Sydney premiere night (details TBA) but if you can't make it, they can be mailed to you free of charge (however, fees apply for international post).

The Challenges

As with any film production, we may find ourselves facing various challenges including: bad weather, securing locations, scheduling difficulties, time restraints and unexpected costs - but rest assured that the Junk Team have contingency plans ready to avoid and adapt to such issues.

Too easy! After you click the PLEDGE NOW button at the top of the page, you will be asked to select a Pledge amount and a Reward. Then you’ll be taken through the Pozible checkout and payment process.

Couldn’t be simpler, couldn’t be safer.

Please remember that if our target goal is NOT reached by our deadline on JULY 22nd, then we will receive ZERO funding for our film.

Pozible is an ALL-OR-NOTHING crowdfunding platform so please help us make sure we reach our target. Every dollar helps and with your support we can make this campaign a roaring success.

Please pledge today and become one of our awesome "JUNKIE" supporters!

THANK YOU!
