Alejandro alternative wines

Working for Angoves as a winemaker from 2008 I became involved in the Riverland Vine Improvement Committee who specialised in importing and propagating new and alternative varieties of wine grapes from around the world. Some of these varieties included Fiano, Vermentino, Petit Manseng and Malvasia Biano, Montepulciano, Lagrein, Graciano and Saperavi.
Working as a winemaker for RVIC, I helped them package their trial wines of 2008 and offered assistance and encouragement for 2009 including the production of whites not previously tried before. For 6 productive years we shared equipment, resources and success, as this not-for-profit nursery morphed into a micro-boutique winery. These varieties had piqued my interest, and so began a journey that would see me win a multitude of medals and trophies for my winemaking skills. Ultimately, this lead to me establishing my own boutique winery specialising in producing these most curious alternative wine varieties.
Alex Russell Wines (ARW) was established, then later my first wine label; Alejandro, with production beginning in vintage 2013.
Since that first year of production, Alex Russell Wines has been awarded gold at the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show for the 2014 Alejandro Montepulciano, along with a commendation for the 2013 Alejandro Carménère.

For vintage 2015 I've grown the Alejandro range to include more alternative varieties as well as some more familiar wines. Three white wines, eight reds, and a rose make up the dozen wines that will greet ARW's curious customers when the dedicated online store is launched in late October. Making a comprehensive range of premium quality wine such as this is tough, particularly for a small independent winery. I've not only managed it, but have exceeded expectations by creating some of my highest quality wines to date.
Wines that make up the 2015 Alejandro range are:
REDS: Montepulciano, Lagrein, Saperavi, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Durif, Cabernet, Carménère
PINK: Rose
WHITES: Sparkling Moscato, Chardonnay, Vermentino

I intend to launch the website with all dozen wines, including mixed dozens, ready to ship. To achieve this, all these wines need to be bottled, labelled, boxed and warehoused in one production run. It's a costly process, and this is where ARW needs your help.
The Wine
Bright purple-red with typical Monty aromatics including red to dark fruits, violets and mulberry. Fruit driven with minimal oak contact allows the fruit to express in full. Suited to pastas, cured meats and cheese.

Lagrein - Riverland, South Australia
Deep, dark purple-red to black, rich dark fruit and black cherry to black tea. Subtle, integrated oak with hints of American oak-derived vanilla and coconut. Rich alcohol and a structured palate...not for the faint hearted.
Alcohol: 14.5% | Standard drinks: 8.4 | Varietal Origin: South Tyrol, Northern Italy
Saperavi - Murray Darling, Victoria
Dark purple to black with ripe beetroot, blueberry, mulberry, a touch of fennel, balanced by spicy French oak. Rich sweet fruit,
prominent tannins and a sweet fruit rich finish with lasting oak.
Alcohol: 15.5% | Standard drinks: 9.1 | Varietal Origin: Georgia
Shiraz - Riverland, South Australia
Bright purple-red with white pepper, cherry and black currant complemented by American oak derived vanilla and coconut, giving weight to the mid palate.
Alcohol: 14% | Standard drinks: 8.1 | Varietal Origin: France
Tempranillo - Riverland, South Australia
Bright purple-red, deep, typical characters of plum and dark fruits with distinct Tempranillo aroma. Rich fruit-driven palate with subtle oak suited to tapas foods.
Alcohol: 14.5% | Standard drinks: 8.4 | Varietal Origin: Spain
Durif - Riverland, South Australia
Deep, dark purple-red to black with plum, cherry and black pepper. Rich integrated oak and oak-derived vanilla, coconut, toast and spice. A rich, boozy palate and a tannic wine with a long-lasting finish.
Alcohol: 15.5% | Standard drinks: 8.9 | Varietal Origin: Southern France
Cabernet - Riverland, South Australia
Dark red to purple with sour cherry and black currant on the nose complemented by toasty French oak.
Alcohol: 15% | Standard drinks: 8.8 | Varietal Origin: France
Carménère - Murray Darling, Victoria
A French-oaked beauty, crimson with hues of red and evidence of two years in hogheads. Spice, red capsicum, mint, dark chocolate and a fruit sugar rich palate with a long finish including alcohol and subtle tannin.
Alcohol: 15% | Standard drinks: 8.9 | Varietal Origin: France
Rosé - Riverland, South Australia
Produced from Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, aka GSM. Pale pink to bronze with strawberry and raspberry dominating the nose. A lick of fruit-sugar and citric acid make this a luscious but dry Rose.
Alcohol: 13% | Standard drinks: 7.6
Sparkling Moscato - Riverland, South Australia
Produced from a blend of the unique Canada Muscat and White Frontignac, the nose of this wine is of intense guava and passionfruit. Light on alcohol and luscious with fruit, this wine has excellent acid balance, making it moorish and refreshing.
Alcohol: 8% | Standard drinks: 4.4
Chardonnay - Riverland, South Australia
Pale green straw to gold, with oak fermentation providing complexity of oak and lees to complement peach, melon and citrus varietal characters. A weighty wine with generous alcohol and a rich, smooth palate.
Alcohol: 13.5% | Standard drinks: 7.9 | Varietal Origin: France
Vermentino - Riverland, South Australia
Very pale green to straw with oyster shell, white pepper and lemon on the nose giving this wine its distinct Vermentino character. A dry wine, light in alcohol yet with a well-filled mid palate and acid freshness makes this a wine suited to sardines and oysters or anything white and seafoody.
Alcohol: 11.5% | Standard drinks: 6.7 | Varietal Origin: Sardinia, Italy

and things were going so smoothly…
Just a quick message to let you know where we're are at. We’ve hit a snag with the labelling and we’ve been set back a couple of weeks. It’s frustrating more then anything as this was the weekend we had scheduled to finish the labelling, pick/pack and dispatch. It’s not a big issue but not one that is quickly fixed. Unfortunately all we can do at this point is wait - we anticipate things being resolved in 2 weeks time, then we will be able to begin packing and dispatching.
All wines have now been bottled, Durif being the last, the final piece of the puzzle being the labelling. As always, we will keep you informed of progress and let you know when your Pozible rewards are on their way.
Sorry for the delay and thanks all for being so awesome and supportive. We couldn’t have got to this point without you!
Cheers

Our Pozible crowdfunding campaign was a success! It was quite a journey. It’s certainly satisfying to see the crowd put such faith in something in which we believe so strongly.
From here, we will start work on bottling up the Alejandro range of wines. While some are already in the bottle, most are not. It’s quite a process to get through and we’re expecting to have the entire range ready to ship by late October. Throughout this process we’ll keep you informed of any milestones and successes as well as any hiccups or schedule variants.
You can follow us on Facebook where we’ll be posting pics as things progress, and we’ll also send an email every now and then with new updates. https://www.facebook.com/alexrussellwines
Once again, a MASSIVE thank you to all our supporters and we look forward to shipping out the rewards soon!
Cheers

How The Funds Will Be Used
From there our team will assemble the mixed cases, and the spoils will be handed over to our distributors. That's when our wise and generous Pozible contributors get to reap the benefits of their investment and experience some of the most interesting wine on the Australian market.
The Challenges
The distribution process is being developed, with some obstacles already overcome. Possible distribution issues have been identified and fall-back options for overcoming obstacles have been established.
I am confident these potential concerns can be handled efficiently, if and as they arise.
