My name is Fagyn Gwyther-McCuskey. I am currently in my final year studying Film at JMC Academy. Over the course of this year I have been working very hard to complete a script that is both light and engaging.
We've all played a sport once in our lives. We've all had that one umpire who gave you shit, or didn't give 'enough' of a shit.
Growing up, basketball was a necessity. Weather it was shooting hoops on our cousins basketball court, or draining 3's on the 64 classic NBA Hangtime. We lived, we breathed and lived again.
'Blow my Whistle Bitch' is a mockumentary based on two friends and their passion of basketball and umpiring.
LOGLINE:
"Insignificant in the real world, but on these courts, you go by their whistle."
SYNOPSIS:
Inside the Coburg Basketball Stadium Merlyn revered for his once ‘wizard’ like moves. Gabriel, a narcissistic hot head, known as 'that guy' who clung like dung to the once brilliant Merlyn. Fast forward: now in their late 20's and living in their small, cheap and homely rental in Melbourne's northern suburbs. With 7 years experience under their belts as Basketball referees, an opportunity presents itself when they hear a scout from the Big V is on the look-out for the next big thing in umpiring. Gabriel’s ambition of becoming a prominent referee is just a few calls away. Merlyn believes Gabriel is losing sight of whats most important; the game and their friendship. The angst and pressure is getting to Gabriel. Will he be able to fight back and secure himself a spot bumping shoulders with Victorias Umpiring leaders? What will this mean for Merlyn?
With a cast both mindless and professional and a crew dying to be 'subbed' in , 'Blow my Whistle Bitch' is an original script that needs to be 'bounced' off the drawing-board and onto the screen.
How The Funds Will Be Used
For this masterpiece to be transformed onto screen we need your help.
BUDGET:
$180 - This will go towards catering our cast and crew for 3 filming days.
$110 - To hire the Coburg Basketball Stadium.
$200 - Costumes for our main characters include head to toe umpiring gear. Props; basketballs, whistles, bibs etc.
STRETCH GOALS:
If successful, and we reach over our target - the rest of the money will help us with fees for film festival submissions. We also hope to create a short web series which we will delve into once I have graduated. Once the film has travelled through all the departments to completion, we hope to have a private screening for those interested (location TBA).
For filming to begin middle of September, we urge you to help get this film on the court!
The Challenges
A significant challenge for 'Blow My Whistle Bitch!' has been securing a location for all the archival/stadium footage. Thanks to Coburg Basketball Stadium we have secured our location.
Another difficulty for the film is the amount of extras we will need to fill the stadium. Its crucial we create the illusion, successfully, so that the mockumentary genre is intelligible and fully expressed. What this means is that we must organise large crowds for different scenes. To do this we will be casting for extras on Star Now over the next couple of weeks and putting up flyers at the Coburg Stadium to see if anyone within the community wants to get involved also.
