My name is Sarah Cabanilla, and I am the writer and director of the short film Tandem. Tandem is a short film with a quirky mix of comedy and drama, in the vein of films such as Juno, Little Miss Sunshine and the Adventureland.


I was inspired to write this story after befriending a boy who was the total opposite of me - while my idea of fun (lying in bed, eating pizza and watching Adventure Time all day) is something boring to him, and his idea of fun (getting drunk at 6PM and going out clubbing until the break of dawn) is completely unappealing to me, we were still extremely close - we still hang out, have inside jokes, and know things about each other that nobody else does. 

It has also been my ambition to create a story which means to others what films like Juno and Little Miss Sunshine were to me - lessons to live by. It is my belief that films - whether fiction or non-fiction - can change the world. The stories that impacted my life have always given me better values than any self-help or text book ever have, and it is my goal to create something that will have that same life-changing, inspiring effect on somebody else's life. 


We follow the story of Riley, a charismatic and vivacious girl who thinks she has her life together - she has a college degree, a well paying job and her own apartment - but she she doesn't have are many notifications from her friends on Facebook... Nor does she have any friends in general. So, when she runs into Kai, a guarded and ill-tempered boy who once tried to steal her bike, driven by loneliness, desperation and a belief in destiny, Riley tries her best to pursue a friendship, while he tries his best to avoid it.

While I have a dedicated, amazingly talented group of film makers behind me, we cannot make the film on our own. We need your help to bring this story to life.


We plan on using your contributions to benefit the production value of Tandem, and to create the best possible film we can make. The film's budget consists of:Equipment hire: $400
We wish to enter this film into various festivals, and to treat our audience with the highest quality image that we can. This is why we need the best equipment we can get on our small budget.

Location costs: $100 / Props and Costumes: $300
To create Riley's quirky little world, we need locations, props and costumes that do not come cheap. With this money, we will strive to make Riley, Kai and the sunny city they live in come to life on screen.


Catering: $400
A four day shoot means a hungry cast and crew - this money will go towards nutritious and healthy feeds, to keep ourselves going for the duration of production.

Transportation costs: $100
Our cast and crew come from all over Melbourne - some have to travel a great distance, so this part of the budget will cover the costs it takes to travel to and from location.


If we are to exceed our target goal, we will be using the extra money for festival submission fees. It would also be lovely to pay our cast and crew for the time, work and effort they have contributed (and will contribute) to this project.
