Lucy Guerin Inc is a Melbourne based contemporary dance company. We are dedicated to supporting local independent dance artists by offering a supportive, generous environment to create contemporary dance work. One of the best examples of this is the annual performance season Pieces for Small Spaces.
Pieces for Small Spaces is a unique opportunity for five choreographers to challenge their practice, take risks and present a new short dance work as part of a professional performance season.

It has had a profound impact on our community and will continue to focus on the work of the artist, which becomes more and more difficult to defend. That precious time to think, create, and explore through movement without any other agenda will continue to be offered by Pieces for Small Spaces."

To break it down entirely:
- 5 independent choreographers
- 5 new short dance works
- 5 performances over 5 days
- Curation and artist mentorship by Lucy Guerin & Melanie Lane.
Pieces for Small Spaces alleviates many of the pressures that come with making work, whilst also connecting these artists to mentorship from Lucy Guerin, one of Australia’s most highly regarded choreographers and Melanie Lane, Resident Director 2015.
The program offers a great freedom to create - in fact, the only limitation is simply the ‘small space’ of the Lucy Guerin Inc Studio itself. This opportunity is rare, unique and we want it to continue to be a staple of the Melbourne dance community!

GIVE ME SOME SUCCESS STORIES - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
MELANIE LANE
Melanie is an Australian choreographer/dancer who has recently returned from practicing in Europe successfully for many years to again establish herself in Australia. She is in the process of seeking and building new networks whilst continuing to develop her practice here in Melbourne. Whilst overseas, Melanie continued to maintain peer relationships with artists such as Antony Hamilton, which facilitated a re-connection with Lucy Guerin Inc on Melanie’s return to Australia. Lucy Guerin Inc identified Melanie’s potential early on and supported her in the first stage of development for her latest work Merge (Dance Massive, 2015). Lucy then went on to curate Melanie as a part of Pieces for Small Spaces 2014. Melanie’s work was a highlight of the season receiving extremely positive feedback, and most importantly providing Melanie with some invaluable new connections to the Melbourne community. Melanie was appointed as Lucy Guerin Inc’s 2015 Resident Director.

As an Australian artist recently having re-located back to Australia after 14 years abroad, Lucy has opened numerous doors for me upon my return. These opportunities have not only allowed me to establish new relationships and networks but has also to allowed me to continue to develop my work and share it with new audiences - a rare and invaluable process during this daunting transition."

ATLANTA EKE
Atlanta Eke is a dancer and choreographer who works in Australia and Internationally. In 2011, Lucy Guerin curated Atlanta Eke in Pieces for Small Spaces, at the same time she was also involved in Next Wave’s Kickstart program for emerging talent. Atlanta created and performed a group piece Untitled, an experimental work through which Atlanta appeared to be in the early stages of finding and defining her artistic voice. Since 2011, Atlanta has achieved many successes including presentations
at Next Wave 2012, Dance Massive 2013 and MONA FOMA. Amongst other impressive achievements Atlanta was the recipient of the inaugural Keir Choreographic Award for her latest work Body of Work, also presented at Dance Massive 2015.

Lucy has a finely tuned, perceptive eye and offered me honest and insightful advice regarding my performance and my practice as a dance maker more generally. The performance season was a platform where I felt I could take risks, try something I had not done before and be supported by the coming together of community."

Pieces for Small Spaces has become a notable and influential staple of Melbourne’s artistic calendar, while still retaining its unique identity as a launching pad and testing ground for young and emerging choreographers.
Looking back on the past ten years of Pieces for Small Spaces achievements it is clear this is a program that is able to perpetuate continued accomplishments for the choreographers, years beyond their involvement in the program.
