In 2016 Women’s Circus is excited to be celebrating 25 incredible years!
And to honour this massive milestone, we're going to create a new circus-theatre work, featuring our amazing members, to be unveiled at the Footscray Community Art Centre (FCAC) in November 2016 – back in our original home after a quarter century!
Cast of HERSTORY (2009)
Thousands of women have trained, performed and found a second home at the Women’s Circus and across our 25 years has made a remarkable contribution to these women and their communities. Through our training programs, creative projects and membership productions many women have made positive changes in the lives and found life long friends!
“Participating in the Women's Circus shows has been fundamental to me feeling like I am a part of a community. They allow women with vastly different circus and life skills and experiences to work together to achieve a common goal. I can’t wait for the next one!” – Kristen Bell, Member since 2005
Our 25 Year production will be devised and performed by our wonderful training members and a team of professional artists. For some participants this will be their first time performing, for others, their twenty-fifth Women's Circus show! Over the coming months our Artistic Director Steph Kehoe will collaborate with our ever-amazing Women's Circus trainers, our valued members and a dedicated team of community-based artists to develop this circus extravaganza for all to experience.
!!BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
How The Funds Will Be Used
$8000 will truly go a long way to making our dream of an inclusive and accessible community show a reality. We have secured some funding from Besen Foundation and Maribyrnong City Council. This money will support production costs (costumes, props, specilaised equipment and rigging) and will help pay professional artists and staff to deliver the project.
But we need more.
Why?

the Performance Space at Footscray Community Arts Centre
It’s very fitting to celebrate our 25-year anniversary show where Women’s Circus began in 1991- Footscray Community Arts Centre. And their space is equipped to handle the specialised needs of a circus production. We have a long and supportive relationship with FCAC and they have been very generous in offering some in-kind support towards our production. However, there are still costs related to using the venue.
These include:
- paying their front of house, tech support and venue staff throughout our rehearsals and production season
- the costs of the installation of a retrospective exhibition in the gallery space
VENUE COSTS= $5000

Circus Trainer Mija Gwyn teaching at Deaf Christmas Market 2015
We want to make our production accessible to as broad a community of participants as possible.
So, for those who need it, we will:
- supply Myki cards and travel subsidies
- provide onsite childcare during rehearsals
We will also:
- hire Auslan interpreters for rehearsals
- interpret two shows during the season at Footscray Community Arts Centre
- close caption our videos for the exhibition
- offer scholarships into our classes to those who may not be able to pay for the training necessary to participate in the show
ACCESSIBILITY= $3000
The Challenges
The collaborative creative process takes time. And working with community participants, from all backgrounds and skill levels, means we need to ensure we have that time so new skills can be developed and so that trust within the group can be established and nurtured.
And time = money.
$8000 will make a world of difference!
Tax Deductible Donation
