WHY WE ARE MAKING SEDIH // SUNNO

In 2015, my mother shared her story of having been sexually abused as a child. Upon Listening to how these early experiences coloured her life with Sadness, I felt utterly compelled to lead the creation of a new work honouring her courage in speaking out.

We are wanting to start a gentle, honest and respectful conversation about child sexual abuse- an unfortunately common experience of trauma that cuts across cultures, genders, age and class.

However, for such a common experience of violence, there is such shame surrounding this topic. Even worse, this is shame that is often internalised by many victims/ survivors, one of them being my mother.

Through SEDIH // SUNNO we are saying to all victims and survivors of child sexual abuse and sexual violence more broadly, that there is no need to be ashamed. That we are with you, in support of you, in your sadness and pain.

YOUR SUPPORT will ensure that this work continues to BREAK the SHAME surrounding child sexual abuse!

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

We have had incredible support from the Australia Council for the Arts, Creative Victoria, the Besen Family Foundation, Next Wave, and Metro Arts, but specifically for the development stage of Sedih // Sunno.

Now we need YOUR SUPPORT for the final outcome: to premiere Sedih // Sunno at Next Wave Festival 2016 (Melbourne) and Metro Arts (Brisbane) in August 2016!

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH program, every dollar you give to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we reach our campaign target of $4000.

YOUR SUPPORT will ensure that this work continues to inspire heart-moving, transformative conversations!

A LITTLE MORE BACKGROUND INFO

SEDIH // SUNNO is the premiere performance installation by Rani P Collaborations, co-presented by Next Wave (Melbourne) and Metro Arts (Brisbane) in May and August 2016.

The Sedih // Sunno team have created a visually stunning installation out of Rani’s mother’s (Dinny Jusuf’s) collection of Javanese Batik. Twelve audience members at a time are taken on an hour-long journey through intimate rooms created from Batik.

Audiences hear personal stories from Dinny’s childhood, as a Chinese-Indonesian woman growing up in Solo of the 1960s, to a peranakan Chinese mother and a Javanese Muslim father, originating from a family of Batik Pesisir artisans.

Rani P Collaborations’ vision is to inspire conversations, self-reflection and social change through the performing arts.

Sedih // Sunno is a co-creation by Rani Pramesti, Ria Soemardjo, Shivanjani Lal and Kei Murakami.

- 10 % will go towards venue hire

The Challenges

1) The challenge of making an intimate work for smaller audience numbers while covering all our costs: Breaking even can be difficult with such small box office income so every dollar you give will make a significant impact on our budget!

2) The challenge of making a work about child sexual abuse: We’ve consulted with organisations that work specifically with survivors of child sexual abuse and sexual assault, to make sure that we do this project as sensitively and ethically as possible.

Help us have this conversation with our audience and bring the topic onto our social agenda.

3) The challenge of receiving financial support outside of our artistic networks: Most of our networks are artists who have an abundance of energy, creative ideas and skills but not necessarily a lot of cash! So, if you are a BUSINESS or INDIVIDUAL who can be one of our SUPERSTAR SPONSORS or MEGA SUPERNOVA SPONSORS, please get in touch! We would love your support!
