The Suburban Review is a literary collective that worships creative writing.

This year we’re releasing Vol. 7 of our print journal. It will be dedicated to artists and writers of colour.

We follow in the footsteps of Southern Crossings, Mascara Literary Review, and Peril—Australian publications that already champion work by often-marginalised voices. Australia has many talented writers and artists of colour, and we want to hear them, see them, celebrate them!

In Vol. 7 we will be publishing 85 glorious pages of work by contributors who identify as people of colour. If you identify in this way and you’d like to submit your work, please click here

Vol. 7 is about proliferation; of voices, aesthetics, experiences, stories. In fact, we’re actively fighting against the silencing of non-white voices in creative communities.

This silencing was no accident, and our response and retaliation is not accidental. This is no one-off gesture, no empty symbol. We want to demonstrate a way to change the game, and we need your help to turn this into reality.

The editor-in-chief of The Suburban Review’s Vol. 7 will be Anupama Pilbrow, our deputy editor and a writer whose work focuses on experiences of racial and ethnic marginalisation. This is an issue close to her (and our) heart.

Contributors:

RACHEL ANG
We're pleased to announce that the resident artist for Vol. 7 will be Rachel Ang.

Rachel is an illustration and comics artist from Melbourne, Australia. She tells stories about the mysterious worlds which lie just beneath the surface of our own. This year she has been artist-in-residence at Tolne Gjæstgivergaard in far north Denmark, and she is the recipient of the Banksia Project - a project to promote and mentor talented young female comic artists in Australia in 2016. Visit her website here.

Her wonderful artwork is now the image for this pozible campaign and our facebook advertisements. We're really looking forward to seeing what she comes up with for Vol. 7!

HANNAH DONNELLY

We're pumped to announce that Hannah Donnelly will be published in Vol. 7!

Hannah Donnelly is a Wiradjuri woman from New South Wales who grew up on Gamilaroi country. Creator of Sovereign Trax Indigenous music culture blog and co-editor of the Sovereign Apocalypse zine. We're thrilled that Alison Whittaker will be on board for Vol. 7!

Alison Whittaker is a Gomeroi interdisciplinary poet and essayist. She works on Gadigal and Wangal land in media law and Aboriginal women’s law and policy. SEAN WAI KEUNG

We're excited to announce that Sean Wai Keung will grace the pages of Vol. 7.

Sean Wai Keung is a UK-based poet and performer. In 2013 he was awarded the Farrago Zoo Award for Best Debut Poetry Performance and in 2015 he won the Cafe Writers Funniest Poem Award. He is digital editor for Lunar Poetry and continues to organise poetry events across the UK, including the World's End Poetry Series for Chelsea Theatre, London. He can be found here and he can be followed @SeanWaiKeung.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The funds we raise will go towards paying contributors. We’ve always made it a point to support the talented writers and artists we publish in print, and this time is no different. We also want to increase the amount of money we can offer contributors.

Any additional money raised will go towards printing what will quite possibly be our very best (and most beautiful) volume, yet!

Our staff works entirely on a volunteer basis, so every cent raised from this campaign goes directly to our talented contributors and to the cost of the publication.

The Challenges

Apart from the obvious "we're literally challenging the status quo" aspect of Vol .7, we're also going to need help spreading the word! We want to incorporate the spirit of Vol. 7 into all future volumes of The Suburban Review, so we really want to get this right.
