We have 60 odd hours left and it would be amazing to surpass our original target and aim for a healthy, rounded figure of $10,000! If you are planning on coming to the festival and want to secure tickets early or get your hands on a SUFF DOG TAG and support SUFF, then pledge now- while you can! The extra funds will be put to good use, i assure you and will mean we can order more trophies for award winners (yes they cost! We were planning on less award as we can't always afford them but this way we can order enough for the next 3 years!), we will also be able to provide better accommodation for visiting guests, order more T-shirts for volunteers and staff, and pay for extra marketing (i.e posters, banners and online advertising.)

Hello, TEAM SUFF here!

Running SUFF for the past several years has been an absolute blast. We’re an independent underground film festival committed to screening the weirdest and most wonderful films we can find – how could we not be enjoying ourselves?

As the 2014 festival approaches, we are pretty darn motivated and excited about what the year has in store – but we are a not-for-profit endeavour. We work for the love of independent cinema, and we always seek to deliver the best festival we can. This year, we are asking for your assistance to do just that. This Pozible campaign will enable us create the greatest festival yet, and have a little more freedom than we are used to.

We want to bring you the best alternative films, awesome guests, interesting workshops and to make sure that you have lots of wayward fun (and save audiences from BCS! See video for an explanation!) We hope you can support our festival, with adding to the audience experience our ultimate aim. Help us make SUFF the best it can be – and you’ll get to share the spoils!

The Sydney Underground Film Festival (SUFF) was launched in September 2007 by founders Katherine Berger and Stefan Popescu, and has been running annually ever since. (Scroll down to “Who is behind this madness” for more info.) From a humble beginning with only 1 cinema and 10 sessions, the festival has grown to 4 cinemas and over 40 sessions and has screened 900 films in seven years!


The SUFF program has featured an extremely diverse range of feature films, documentaries and shorts. From films that slam the IMF and the WTO to the infamous Donkey Lovin' documentary to Illegal screenings - SUFF does what no other festival can do. Not to mention, screening work by a range of luminaries such as Alejandro Jodorowsky, Gaspar Noe, David Lynch, Harmony Korine, Martha Colburn, John Waters, Oliver Stone, George Gittoes, Guy Maddin, Larry Clark, Paul Schrader and Bret Easton Ellis. SUFF’s aim has always been to foster an alternative film culture in Sydney where the work of renowned filmmakers screens alongside Australian and international emerging filmmaking talent.


SUFF strives to showcase the creation of original, artistic, wild, subversive, political, experimental, environmental, and entertaining films. We believe SUFF’s unique programming and no-holds-barred approach to putting on an event is what makes SUFF stand out from the crowd – and the film festival landscape is crowded. With such a current worldwide interest in independent and experimental films, many of which do not always receive the exposure they deserve, SUFF is determined to nurture a new breed of film culture in any way it can. Why we need your help

Funding our film festival makes us think of the old chicken and egg adage. We primarily rely on ticket sales to finance our event, but need to outlay money for running expenses before we even announce our program. We need to spend money to create a great festival to attract our audience, with one influential upon the other. There’s always a risk of not having enough money to market and prepare the event successfully, which increases the risk of not reaching enough ticket sales and attendance to at least break even.

In 2014, we also have the challenge of dealing with new technology that is not readily available at our venue. The Factory Theatre is our home, but it is not a normal cinema with standard technology in place. With the rise of digital cinema projection (DCP) technology, we ran into extra costs in 2013 dealing with this, which means more rising costs for us as an organisation.
