The Penguin Runner 2.0
In May 2013 Dave Chamberlain set off from St Johns, Newfoundland on an unsupported trans Canada run. In collaboration with W.W.F. and BirdLife South Africa, he is raising funds for penguins, rhinos and polar bears.
The guy is a machine, I will meet him on the 1st of October at Crows nest Pass, Alberta. Exactly 123 days and 6250km since he started. He has been running in excess of 50km per day, with one day covering 87km.
I have 2 weeks to shoot a film that will look at the person who is Dave Chamberlain and what drives someone to undertake such adventures. This is not his first leisurely jog!
The 36 year old South African is a pretty unique character, in the past 3 years he has run over 14,000km for conservation across 4 countries (Argentina, South Africa, Namibia and Canada).
I first met him in 2009 on Little Corn Island in Nicaragua, he taught me to Scuba Dive. His adventurous streak was evident immediately when he convinced a friend and I we should swim the 8km around the island with him.
Fast forward to October 2012. Add one unemployed Environmental Scientist living in a foreign land. And one Adventurer about to run 2700km unsupported through the oldest desert on earth and you have The Penguin Runner.

While the Namibia film was a visual celebration of the environment and the person, this film will focus on the individual, a humble man, just trying to encourage people to get out enjoy nature and protect natural areas. It will be filmed with the stunning backdrop of the Canadian Rockies and pass through a number of small B.C towns (Fernie, Cranbrook, Nelson just to name a few).
Two products will be completed.
The First will be a 3-5 minute promotional clip for The Vidamago Foundation. This is the South African based organisation Dave set up to raise conservation funds and to also inspire people to attempt their own adventures, no matter how big or small.
The second will be a feature 40-60 minute look at the man himself, what inspires him on those long lonely days, and where he hopes these runs will take him. It will examine physically and mentally the requirement of what is essentially running over a marathon a day, with no comfortable bed or hot meal to look forward to at days end.
The Challenges
He has not been injured in 14,000km of running this far. The risk of this happening is low. If for some reason he has not made the meeting point, I just drive a little further to where he made it too.
He is also carrying Bear spray!
Good Karma, knowledge you contributed to an awesome project
