The Common Room
Paper Mountain is an artist-run space in Northbridge with a gallery and studios. The Common Room will turn some of the existing sub-let studios into a co-working space for the creative community, aimed at those in the creative industries who need a place to work but might not need, or be able to afford, an office or studio.
The Common Room will consist of large central tables for workshops, meetings and large creative projects; smaller desks for more contained work (like drawing and writing); free wifi; lots of powerpoints for laptops; a resource library and a wood-workshop.
To fit out the Common Room, Paper Mountain is excited to team up with local designer A Good Looking Man (Andrew Christie) who will be custom-building furniture that is solid, beautiful and moveable, and maximizes the possible uses of the space.

One of the building’s quirks is a solid concrete vault in the Common Room area, left over from the days when the space was an illegal gambling den. If we raise enough money, we’ll build safety rails and a ladder to turn the top of the vault into a furnished sitting area. This will turn underutilized space into a comfortable elevated space to read and relax, accessible by ladder and slightly separate from the work area.
The Bigger Picture

This is an exciting time to be in Perth. The creative industries are going from strength to strength, and new projects are developing all over the place. Paper Mountain is one of the spaces at the centre of this growth.
At the beginning of 2013 we (the Paper Mountain Co-directors) rewrote our entire gallery model with the aim of providing greater support to artists. This saw, amongst other things, gallery fees reduced, exhibition periods extended, promotional material and catalogues produced by the gallery, as well as gallery sitting covered by a new team of volunteers (which means artists no longer have to take time off work to sit their shows).
We considered the studio space with a renewed focus on nurturing emerging artists and the growth of a creative community, and The Common Room seemed like a natural progression. We hope that this space will provide people with a wide variety of creative interests with an affordable space to work, collaborate and share ideas.
Membership Details
Essential to the vision of the Common Room is that membership is inexpensive, so that as many artists and creative as possible can enjoy its facilities without the necessary expenses of full-time studio rent. A 6-month membership is $240, which works out to be just $10/week for full access to all Common Room benefits. And for those with commitment issues or a flexible lifestyle, there is the alternative month-by-month trial membership for $75/month. Opening hours for all Common Room members will be 9am-5pm Tuesday-Sunday.
Common Room membership is aimed at people in the creative industries: artists, designers, filmmakers, web developers, writers, performers, illustrators, photographers, musicians, everything in between!

It is important to note that Paper Mountain is 100% volunteer run – none of the co-directors get paid a cent. At the moment, the building rent, outgoings and exhibition costs are covered (just) by studio sub-letting and gallery hire fees, with little room for financial growth. Income from membership fees will help improve the financial sustainability of Paper Mountain, and allow us to continue to support artists and others in the creative industries.
We think Perth needs this space. We want you to help us build it.
