The Grawin-Glengarry-Sheepyard Opal Fields Men's Shed Inc was formed in July 2011 to build a Men's Shed in our remote NW-NSW opal mining community. In such a small community, the Shed will provide an important place for blokes (and a few sheilas) to get together and socialise; discuss issues & concerns; work on individual, group and community projects; and share & learn new skills. We want to establish a community workspace, a comprehensive "Tool Bank" for members to use, and a facility where (both formal and informal) training can take place. We also want to provide a place where local teenagers can interact with working adults in a safe working environment to develop new skills and interests. We have been fundraising hard since the group was formed, with the help of our small community, but need "just a little bit more money" to finalise our shed construction so are appealing for wider support!

The Challenges

Obstacles to this project might include:-
* Timing of construction and Summer weather - it can get very hot on the Opal Fields over the Summer months, and many people leave the area until the temperatures cool down. A number of the contractors who have pledged support do live on the Fields full-time (and are thus acclimatised!), and work can be done in the cooler hours of the day. Much of the preparatory site work and shed foundations are already underway and will be completed before the temps get too high.
* DA approval - we are working closely with the Walgett Shire Council to ensure our shed & site plans are suitable, and that we have all the appropriate approvals/plans/environmental requirements met.
* Strength of our member work force - we do have 30 members currently, but we have the support and pledged assistance of the entire community, as well as Men's Shed established in the neighbouring towns of Walgett and Lightning Ridge.

A single "Opal Specimen" from the Grawin-Glengarry-Sheepyard Opal Fields will be provided for those who pledge between $25 and $50. Every specimen is unique, locally sourced, and beautiful! Specimens may be of any colour/s.
