Black AS - Season 3
BLACK AS SEASON THREE - THE FISHING COMP
SO FAR
Seasons 1 and 2 of Black As have proven to be a huge hit and lightened the hearts of millions throughout the world.
It's created a window into remote Aboriginal Australia and given a voice to four young men who want to show how they live and survive in one of the wildest places on earth.
SEASON THREE
We want to make a third season but this time go truly independent to give us more freedom to do things our way. So we are asking all our fans to help make Black AS 3 a reality. Filmaking in such a remote and inhospitable part of the world is not cheap but compared to mainstream productions we will be making BA3 on bare bones and by the seat of our pants.
THE STORY
The boys need to get to a large town a few hundred kilometres away to enter a fishing competion. The stakes are high...
$3000 for the biggest barramundi, $2000 for the biggest mackarel and $1000 for the biggest Crayfish. They have an old van and can borrow a dinghy and trailer but the shortcut to the comp is a rough track and we can only pray they get there in one piece. If the dinghy doesnt make it they have heard that Oppy has a big boat just sitting there ready for the "borrowing". Either way Joe knows of a perfect little island to the north where they are bound to get a big enough catch to take out all three catogories. Just hope Oppy doesnt get wind of it!
SCHEDULE
We plan to start shooting in early September this year and start editing in October/November. The delay being the need for translations of what the boys are saying into English and making subtitles. We hope to have the Season 3 up and on Youtube and Facebook possibly by Christmas or early in the the new year.
Budget Overview
With two series of Black As under our belt, Rebel Films are a finely tuned production machine!
David Batty is a director/cameraman with over 30 years experience predominantly working in remote Australia. We are a small multi-skilled team who know how to work in tough conditions. We’ve done it before – and we’ll do it again!
Realistically we need around $150k to make this series but we’re starting with a base line of $60k. Reason being, we love the boys and want to make this happen -soon. If we go through the usual funding channels it could take another six months to finance. I don’t think you – or we - can wait that long.
Budget - The absolute minimum we need to go into production is $60k. This will cover the cost of the shoot including travel expenses, vehicle costs, props, fuel (approx. $2.20 per litre in remote Australia), food, unit supplies and modest fees for the boys.
We’ll have a two person crew, an all-in-one camera assistant/data wrangler/second cameraman (who is also our editor) and a jack-of-all-trades unit manager/driver/mechanic/boat and croc wrangler. Our producer is also on the ground taking care of business and making sure everyone gets through the day alive and well. The crew will be paid award rates.
Our production company, Rebel Films is essentially producing, directing and providing camera and sound equipment free of charge. We are also absorbing the costs of insurance, workcover and all production overheads. $60k means we can shoot it, but we’ll have no fat and no safety net.
If we raise $80k – $100K this will cover post production costs. Everything we shoot has to be translated from Djambarrpuyngu and transcribed into English. Our editor then has to import the translations and make his selects of the material based on the translations and the action. It’s an added layer to the editing process and requires more time and expense in the edit suite. We also need to re-license the music.
With $100k plus, the director and producer will get paid and we can increase the fees for the boys – yay! We might also have some extra $$ to get some fresh Black As music. No promises but we’ll try. Basically, anything over $100k gives us room to breathe. We bust ourselves making this at the best of times, so it would be great to know there was something extra in the kitty. And the more we make, the more content we can bring you.
A special shout-out to our fans in the USA - Currently $1 AUD is equivalent to $0.70c USD...so maybe chuck in a little bit more and your greenbacks can help us go further!
