Bokeh is an upcoming adventurous and uplifting short film created and led by a passionate team of aspiring film students from Swinburne University of Technology. The film is to be shot in late March 2023.

About The Film

Sapan, a young Hindu construction worker wanders the laneways of Melbourne with his vintage film camera. One night, he meets Zoe, a deaf street photographer who shares his passion for the visual medium. Despite the language barrier, the pair learn to communicate through the universal language of photography and embark on a spectacular journey to find the ‘perfect’ photo.

The film is a celebration of the multicultural and diverse spirit of Melbourne. We want to showcase the Melbourne cityscape's remarkable but often overlooked charms. We plan to film in the heart of the Melbourne CBD to celebrate the wonders of the cityscape, from hidden laneways to forgotten parks.

Christian Misuraca - Writer & Director

Bokeh is a passion project of mine that I have been developing over the years, inspired by my personal love for photography, Melbourne, and adventures! Just like the characters in Bokeh, I have always had a passion for the visual medium and as a writer, I love to tell simple and emotional stories.

Daniel Shao - Producer

It's a really engaging story with a simple narrative that features challenging and unique elements. I'm looking forward to learning a lot in this film including the opportunity to work with a Deaf actor for the first time. I am looking forward to helping Christian and the team bring this adventurous uplifting story through extensive planning, training, and rehearsals with various Auslan professionals.

Marsalis Lam - Director of Photography

Using a cinematography term as the title? I’m in! Bokeh has such a focus on visual storytelling and it’s definitely my style, coming from a background in travel and nature photography. I love working with natural light and I look forward to harnessing it to create a beautiful world that complements the story authentically.

Harriett Bothroyd - Production Designer

I am super excited to highlight and emphasise the beauty of Melbourne, bringing this story to life and creating a magical atmosphere. Bokeh is going to be an amazing experience for everyone and I will do my very best to make sure it looks incredible!

Ella Boon - Editor

I am super keen to embark on this journey with a brilliant team to help bring this beautiful story to life! Bokeh presents a unique challenge with its edit due to minimal dialogue. I am excited to embrace this challenge and experiment with new skills and techniques through the process to work alongside sound and visuals :)

Samuel Purser - Sound Designer

My job as the head of sound in this film is to capture the essence of Melbourne through sound and convey it in a way that reflects the film’s protagonists’ experience. There is a rich and layered soundscape Melbourne has for me to draw from. I’m thrilled to begin production and work with the Bokeh crew to tell this fresh and exuberant story.

Bokeh will be a fun and challenging project for everyone involved, blessed with the opportunity to work with a Deaf actor - a first for many of the cast and crew.

Costs include:

• Hiring and working with Auslan consultants and Auslan interpreters
• Location hire
• Equipment hire
• Casting
• Costume, props, and set dressing for actors and locations
• Catering
• Submission to film festivals

Money raised will go directly to the financing and creation of the film. Any excess in donations will go towards various charities and fundraisers to help increase the representation of Deaf and Disabled creatives in the film industry.
