As fires still burn across the country, this picture book celebrates and supports Australia’s secret superheroes – our Firies.

This is a devastating time for Australia. Lives have been lost, entire towns have been engulfed in flames, and countless animals have lost their habitat. And summer is still not over. A beautiful story from this situation is the continuous support from our Firies, who are selflessly putting their lives on the line to protect our country. This act of generosity and selflessness is the story our book aims to share.

Let’s talk about our book

A series of massive, deadly bushfires. A smoke-covered country in crisis. And a team of secret superheroes to save them all! 

The story is centred around Delilah, a clever, little girl who believes she has uncovered her Dad’s biggest secret. He isn’t just a farmer, he is a courageous superhero protecting Australia from the fire monsters. The story follows the adventures of Delilah's Dad a volunteer firefighter, highlighting the heroic acts performed by our firefighters during bushfire season.

'My Dad, the Secret Superhero' aims to help children understand the sacrifice and effort many families are faced with during these difficult times.

The story behind the story

Hello, it's Seb and Carly here and we are so pleased to be launching our book 'My Dad, the Secret Superhero'. Inspiration for this book came from our own personal experience of bushfires near our family farm in Tambellup in country Western Australia. In late December, two fires started near the Stirling Ranges national park, 15kms from our property. Without hesitation, Dad, Seb, friends and neighbours rushed to control the fire, protecting wildlife, habitat, farmlands and homes. Fortunately after 5 days the fires were contained, with no one being harmed and minimal damage to property, unlike our neighbours over east who are still battling the blazes.

Seeing everyone's selfless response to these fires inspired us to find a way to donate our time and skillset to help the people affected by all fires across Australia. So, together we have written and illustrated a children’s book with the aim to fundraise money for those affected by fire, and to shine a light on the secret superheroes who put their lives on the line to defend our country every day.

Along with the donated support from The Brand Agency Perth, Pozible.com, Made In The Pile, David Gardiner PR, Daniels Printing Craftsmen, Studio Six, friends and family, we are able to donate 100% of profits to the cause. 

The part where you come in

With your help, we can make it happen. Your pledge will get this book produced and printed and most importantly, raise money to help wildlife in need and the rehabilitation of the environment. 

My Dad, the Secret Superhero is proudly supporting the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife (FNPW). FNPW is a non-government organisation on a mission to protect Australia’s ecosystems and native species for generations to come. Having invested over $60 million into Australian conservation, FNPW have already made a world of difference to Australia. FNPW have some great initiatives and programs, including Wildlife Heroes which supports hardworking volunteers who invest their time and love to help Australian animals in need. They also have a great initiative called Backyard Buddies, an educational initiative providing simple tips to transform your backyard into a safe and inviting habitat haven.

The more books we sell, the more money we donate. $10,000 will allow us to create the minimum quantity of books required, however we would love to smash our target and sell as many books as we can to share the inspirational story of our Firies and raise as much money as possible.

We have been overwhelmed with the amount of support we have received from friends and colleagues. All the time taken to create this book has been donated. Please refer to the following breakdown:

• $0 - Design, illustration and copywriting has been donated by us, Carly and Seb Moone.
• $0 - The Brand Agency Perth has generously provided us with editing, website development and hosting, strategy, production management and animation at no charge.
• $0 - The talented David Gardiner has donated his PR skills to help us share our story.
• $0 - The great guys at Made In The Pile are creating our case study video.
• $0 - Studio Six have generously donated studio space and lighting for our case study video.
• $0 - The wonderful team at Pozible.com have generously waived their usual 5% fee for the cause.
• $3.75 - $8.20 - The team from Daniels Printing Craftsman, one of Perth’s premier print houses has provided us with discounted printing costs at $3.75 per 2000 books, $5.50 per 1000 books or $8.20 per 500 books.
• $150 - Publishing costs including ISBN number and barcode.
• NA - Postage is to be calculated at checkout.
• The remaining balance after the above deductions will be the charitable donation.
