It's that time friends! I am about to release the first single from my sophomore album The Unlearning. The single is called Sophia and it's coming out 21st March. However, I still have the REST of the album to mix, master, release and get OUT there to the world.
It's a funny thing making art. I have this constant inner burning to create and make sense of the world through song and beat and harmony. And i also have a constant inner critic (Gertrude) who is rather rude and pretty hard to ignore. Sometimes she wins. And sometimes it's the exterior voices who win as well.
The world. Trolls. Even well-meaning friends and family.
And SO? Why the hell make art? Why make anything? Why create things that might be outside the regulated KPI's, the algorithms, that has no "value" in today's society? Things that people (and Gertrude) might disagree with?
This is my small act of rebellion. Of making imperfect, superfluous, pretty things. Of playing rock music in a glittery cape with a mirrorball helmet on. Of being impulsive. Of being OTT. Of being a living example of the paradox that "Art is everything and Art is nothing." And holding that closely in my hand and heart. Every. Damn. Day.
And so I am asking you a favour.

This project has meant being brave in a new city, meeting new people ("Will you be my friend?" seems so weird as a 45yo), putting myself out there and asking for help. I've met some incredibly talented and wonderful, SUPPORTIVE humans including Susan Karen (both of you!) Ruth Gardner, Susie Rowlings, Jamie Lee Dimes, Ali Crane, Tristan Bird, Sue Ray, Yani Mills and more. Not to mention my husband Benjamin and the team back home FOREVER rooting for me, encouraging me, praying for me, loving me down the phone lines.
Making music costs money. And this is me being frugal.
I know it's only rock n roll, but I like it.

One-on-One Virtual Songwriting Co-Write
You used to write, but you don't make time for it anymore. Between work and family there's not much room for self care. This year, why don't you take a side step and add a lil self-care into your routine. Set some time aside, just for you. We will sip tea, write some words and delight in the ancient art of music and song. I've been writing songs since 1999 and haven't looked back really. I love writing. It helps me to process the world around me, express the dark and light within me as well as connect with others on so many different levels. If you would like to write a song or have something you have been working on but just need some help to finish, I would love to sit with you and get that song finished! For a two hour session, we will sit together while we write together and dig in to what you really want to say. I will talk to you about grounding yourself, process, structure and melody and how all over things combined lead to your very own creation. You can come with a half finished song, or nothing at all. Royalties are 100% belong to you. Sessions take place in Kedron, Brisbane or virtually on Zoom. You will need - a note pad/paper and pen - an instrument if you have one - your half written song in online format (word doc or in text/email) so we can edit it together and share easily Book a songwriting session with me and let's explore what's been bubbling away on the back boiler of your mind. Let's get writing!
