We are excited to share that FLENK Collective has been invited to present a paper at the International Committee of Museums - Education and Cultural Action 2024 conference in Athens, Greece this November, and we need your support!

We are fundraising to subsidise travel expenses to attend and present at the conference. Your support would enable us to offer a collaborative, First Nations led approach to learning and arts engagement, to an international audience. 

The theme of the conference is “Delicate topics – Challenging audiences” and FLENK Collective members Laura Carey and Dr Emma Hicks, (Gamilaroi) will co-present a paper that looks at a FLENK learning resource that was created for proppaNow’s exhibition, Occurrent Affair. The resource and its development, is an example of best practice approaches for connecting with and discussing the politics of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture. It engages audiences with current socio-political, economic and environmental issues, while celebrating the strength, resilience and continuity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. It centres First Nations’ perspectives and provides support for creating culturally safer spaces to allow for deeper understanding of complex issues.

Occurrent Affair currently touring nationally across nine museum venues from Feb 2023 - Apr 2025. proppaNOW is one of Australia’s leading cultural collectives, engaging the politics of Aboriginal art and culture, and provoking, subverting and re-thinking what it means to be a ‘contemporary Aboriginal artist’.

We are hoping to raise $3000 to give a minimum subsidy to travel costs for the two speakers but any additional amount beyond that will continue to support the full cost of $6000.

Airfare subsidy- $1500 for 2 speakers

Travel/ Accomodation subsidy - $1500 for 4 nights & travel subsidy for 2 speakers.
