In a fifteen year period, before his untimely death in 2010, Lee Smith produced a number of short 16mm hand-made and abstract films as well as other types of experimental films. Many of the films only exist in their original and highly fragile state. For these films to be projected as they were intended, it is necessary to make 16 mm film prints of the original films. The money raised in this fundraiser will allow for this to occur and for the films to be screened publicly with their new soundtracks internationally.

Alongside working in experimental film Smith was a key figure within the alternative music scene in Melbourne during the 1980s and 90s, and, as such, was the founding member of a number of now legendary post-punk groups including Junk Logic (with Lisa Gerrard), The Leapfrogs and The Morpions in what later became known as ‘the little band’ movement. Even though all of his films are silent, Smith would often play pre-recorded sound or perform live electric guitar noise to these world-class yet largely overlooked hand-made films. This film program builds upon and extends from Smith’s original notion of adding different sounds to each film by inviting a range of international artists, composers and musicians to provide soundtracks for specific films.
