Forest Collective presents Orpheus

“Forest Collective make contemporary music sound, look, and feel exciting.” - CutCommon

To celebrate a new year of creation and collaboration at Forest Collective, we begin 2019 with Orpheus. Presented as part of Midsumma Festival at iconic arts precinct Abbotsford Convent, Orpheus is a new ballet-opera written by Artistic Director Evan Lawson, with choerography by Ashley Dougan (pictured).

The famous Orpheus myth has been used in opera many times. While most works focus on the journey to Hades and his relationship with Eurydice, we explore the unheard stories of the characters left behind by the great men in ancient mythology. Evan Lawson’s Orpheus encompasses this part of the story, but also includes lesser-known parts of the Orpheus myth that focus on his male lover, Calais, while journeying with the Argonauts. The ballet-opera is structured into four elements; one focused on Calais, one on Eurydice, one on the journey to Hades and the final section, where Orpheus is murdered while trying to reunite with Calais.

The performance will be performed by the 12 member ensemble of Forest Collective (some pictured below), including core-mezzo soprano Kate Bright as Eurydice. Three dancers physicalise the sung expressions of the three singers.

As a new opera-ballet exploring the story of Orpheus and paying equal attention to his love of men and women, this story will engage members of the LGBTQI community, those interested in classics and mytholody, and opera fans alike.

Budget Overview

We've been commissioning, creating, and presenting new music and performances throughout the year and squirreling away your donations and fundraising gifts toward this special start to 2019 with Orpheus.

We have some fantastic support from our presenting partners Midsumma Festival, and Abbotsford Convent.

We will have a profit share system to share our ticket sales with the performing musicians and creative team members - think conductor, director, designers - and hopefully some grants to help boost these fees (which we'll hear back on soon). Majority of the profit share goes to our wonderful creative performers and creative team members, while ours goes toward venue hire, performance recordings, and printing.

Your support in this campaign helps us mount the special parts of any performance, and quite a few behind-the-scenes aspects that we can't do without:

- costume and set design

- graphic design and printing

- piano hire, moving, and tuning

- lighting rig and technician hire for the performances
- video and audio recording plus trailer video made by Underground Media

- photography of the performance

- insurance

- contribution toward venue and rehearsal venue hire

Want to know what you might expect at a Forest Collective performance? Skin Deep was a wonderful exploration of graphic scores, improvisation, and new music with unconventional notation. Thank you Chris and Underground Media for this trailer that takes us right back to the performance!
