It’s Not You is a dark sci-fi that hails as a warning to the future of technology, and the dangers it can pose when falling into the wrong hands.

It’s Not You is brought to you by the Western Australian Screen Academy in collaboration with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

It’s Not You is a sci-fi social drama about Dave, a morally-bankrupt narcissist, who feels stuck in an unhappy relationship. In an effort to take back control, he missuses a bootlegged version of a revolutionary personality editing technology, which allows him to modify elements of his girlfriend’s personality, moulding her into his idea of the perfect woman. After realising that he can’t stand living with someone who so closely resembles himself, Dave attempts to adjust his initial modifications. But in the process, he causes the technology to malfunction, forcing himself to try and solve a difficult problem: how does he save his girlfriend while also saving himself?

Cast

Nicholas Perry - Dave

Nicholas is an actor who fell in love with the joys that come with the art form. He’s an actor who tries to enjoy each moment on stage and on set, getting his first taste of the spotlight as a young performer many moons ago and hasn’t been able to step away from it since. Nicholas is a former state level soccer player who has brought focus and commitment to his three years of training at WAAPA. He is excited to see what lies ahead on his journey as a performer, taking it one step at a time.

Morgan Dukes - Liz

Morgan is a passionate and driven artist who leaves no stone unturned. She is always up for a challenge and a terrible pun. Growing up on a farm, riding motorbikes and being in the bush, Morgan loves the outdoors and a good adventure. Acting is something that was a slow realisation for her, but it soon became something that she knew she needed to do, or she’d always regret it.

Lucy Lock - Emily

Lucy is an actor who’s inspired by bold, audacious characters and culturally resonant storytelling. Through acting, Lucy is fulfilled both artistically and emotionally in bringing to life the morally ambiguous transitional moments that govern our humanity. An emerging writer and singer, Lucy brings a wealth of knowledge, instinct and warmth to her craft, and three years of training at WAAPA. She is eager to contribute to the arts industry both nationally and abroad.

Lockie Ranson - Scott

Based in Perth, Lockie Ranson is an up-and-coming actor with a love for both stage and screen. With a genuine love for surfing, summer, and all things ocean, the only thing that’s not just for show is Lockie’s unique look and personality. Over the years, Lockie has played a variety of roles including Jake in A Lie of the Mind, Tranio in Taming of the Shrew, and the Porter in The Elephant Man. Lockie thrives in comedic stories that sit within the truth of human connection.

The Crew

Joshua Craig - Producer

Joshua is an emerging producer who is currently completing his master’s degree at the Western Australian Screen Academy. A self-assessed goofball, he loves collaborating with like-minded filmmakers while having as many laughs as humanly possible. From making home videos to writing short stories, his passion for storytelling and his overactive imagination are things he's embraced for as long as he can remember. Joshua is a fervent advocate for telling Western Australian stories, and he's excited to hone his filmmaking abilities within such a dynamic and ever-evolving local industry.

Jon Pettas - Director

Jon is an avid storyteller and lover of quaint heartfelt movies. While his tendencies most often lend themselves to quiet stories about emotional social dramas[C1] , his belief in films acting as a form of therapy for the audience extends beyond genres. He believes that in creating a narrative and building a relationship with the audience - one must always, without fault, put empathy first.

Cal McLean - Writer

Cal only ever dreamed of one thing when he was growing up: the squeaky courts of the NBA. But when his inability to dunk quickly squashed that dream, he pivoted his focus to the less-athletic world film and television writing. After graduating from Curtin University, where he wrote and directed his first short film, Roll, he has gone on to work in a variety of roles, mostly as a professional writer. Cal shouts his love for comedy from the rooftops, and you can usually find him binging on his couch or thinking about dumb jokes while running around at the park with his dog.

Jake Nguyen - Director of Photography

Jake hails from a background of still photography, fashion clips, and hip-hop dance videography which have all influenced his distinctive voice. Graduating from North Metro TAFE, he wanted to hone his skillset even further and set his sights on the Western Australian Screen Academy. Jake is inspired by experimental lighting setups and visual effects that allow us to tell stories in unique and new ways.

Neel Goodwin - Editor

Neel is the editor and the visual effects artist for It’s Not You. He dedicates an inordinate amount of his time to sitting (or even lying) down. He’s a multi-disciplined digital artist, animator, and editor - he can often be found in his editing booth or finding a place to curl into a ball and sleep. Neel has been working in the arts for over a decade and we couldn’t get rid of him, so he’s on board to stay up into the deep hours, crafting a great viewing experience for you. He’s also trying very hard to make this bio mildly funny. Please laugh.

Val Burnazov - Sound

Val graduated high school with one question: ‘What now?’ After completing numerous certificates and diplomas in various fields he realised he hadn't found the answer to his question. He started a degree in animation and quickly realised he was atrocious at it. However, during these studies he took some electives in film and discovered his passion for editing and sound. Val is drawn towards sci-fi, dark comedy and post-apocalyptic genres as he loves to record practical objects and consumables to generate a unique and bespoke soundscape. Val is studying his master's at the WA screen academy specialising in editing and sound.
