JLD 10x10x0 Recording Project

We need your help to record JLD’s next project and the ensemble’s first recording since 2011!

The new recording features 10 new works created in collaboration with each of JLD’s members – some of Melbourne’s leading improvisers. The recording will be released over two parts – one to be available in 2019 and part two will be released 12 months later.

If you would like to hear some examples of the music we plan on recording, you can listen to Stepping Stones or Opioid, both of which were recorded by ABC Jazz live at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

About JLD

Winner of the 2011 ‘Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year’ (Australian Jazz ‘Bell’ Awards) and the 2011 ‘Jazz Work of the Year’ (APRA/AMC Art Music Awards), Johannes Luebbers has emerged as one of Australia’s most distinctive jazz composers. Graduating from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2006, Johannes studied arranging with Graeme Lyall, piano with Graham Wood and Tom O’Halloran and was awarded the ‘Bob Wylie Scholarship’ for the most outstanding graduate. He has also released two albums with his own award winning ensemble, the Johannes Luebbers Dectet (JLD). Budget Overview

Budget

This project is very fortunate to have received some support from the Australia Council for the Arts and Monash University. Recording an ensemble this size is a time consuming and expensive process and, in addition to the funding already received, we need to raise an additional $4500 to successfully complete the project. Below is a break-down in the costs involved, as well as our current income. I will not be taking a fee for any part of the project.

  • Band ($900 each for three days’ recording) - $9,000
  • Band ($300 each for two paid rehearsals) - $3,000
  • Recording studio (three days) - $1,650
  • Engineer (three days) - $1,485
  • Engineer (mixing) - $2,750
  • Mastering - $1,210
  • Artwork - $1,000
  • Physical CD pressing - $2,900
  • Piano tuning - $440
  • Videographer - $700
  • Photographer - $300

Total costs: $24,435

Income

  • Australia Council for the Arts - $16,000
  • Monash University - $1,600
  • Personal contribution - $2,335
  • This campaign! - $4,500

Total income: $24, 435

Stretch goals

If we can raise beyond our target of $4,500, this will be used to get better video documentation and to invest in publicity and promotion upon the release. This would be ideal in order to support the promotion of the recording internationally and to increase its exposure online.
