LINGER (Short film)
Synopsis
Linger is a short comedy film about Ariel, a young woman in her 20s who has a one-night-stand with her roommate, Aidan's, ex-girlfriend Cat. The next morning, Ariel and her roommates scramble chaotically to find ways to get Cat to leave before Aidan's parents arrive to meet his new partner, Nicole, for the first time.
As well as being a story everyone can relate to, Linger is a film made for and by the LGTBQ+ community, so it is a project created by people who truly understand the importance of having our stories told. Our aim is to create a film that is not only funny, but a place where you can feel seen and represented on screen.

About the Cast
Chaya Ocampo as Ariel
Chaya is a Filipino-Australian actor, writer, theatre-maker and storyteller currently based in Perth, Australia. She has performed in a number of works ranging in theatre, television, film, and recorded voice, and she is soon to be performing in a recreation of Gloria, a third-year production at WAAPA. As a bisexual actor, Chaya is incredibly excited to be a part of Linger; a queer comedy she wishes she saw more of at a younger age. Chaya is very passionate about POC and queer representation and is over-the-moon she’s involved in this amazing project with an all-female queer production team, as well as diverse cast!
Abbey Morgan as Cat
Originally from Canberra, Abbey moved to Perth in 2019 in order to undertake the Bachelor of Arts (Acting) at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), where she recently co-created a physical theatre piece called Let Me Think About It, as part of Season One of New Voices. Through the development of this piece, Abbey discovered her passion for thought-provoking and culturally resonant projects, which also incite joy in the viewer. Abbey feels incredibly fortunate to be a part of Linger – a film that will not only make you laugh, but also make people feel seen and represented.
Darren Kumar as Aidan
Born in Sydney and raised by Fijian Indian parents, Darren spent half his time in the suburbs of Western Sydney, and the other half on a farm or by the beach in Fiji. Darren discovered his love and passion for films and cinema at a young age; always fascinated by the craft of acting. He was stung by the acting bug during his senior high school drama classes which pushed him to pursue a career around telling stories through cinema and expressing what it means to be human. Darren hopes to be a role-model for Indians in Western countries who they can relate to when watching the stage, film and television performances.
Angelica Rose Lockyer
Angelica Rose Lockyer is an Aboriginal actor who identifies as non-binary from Port Hedland, currently undertaking the Bachelor of Arts (Acting) at WAAPA, who has a deep love for theatre, and a passion for voice acting. With a new-found courtship with the camera, Jelly believes Linger allows her to not only explore this relationship with screen acting, but also offers her the opportunity to partake in some much-needed wholesome queer representation. In the film, Jelly plays Nicole, the innocent, if not extremely entertained, bystander to the shenanigans that ensue.
About the Crew
Aaryn Bath - Director
Aaryn is a director and screenwriter based in Perth, Australia. Whilst completing her Bachelor of Media and Communications, majoring in Film and Video, Aaryn wrote and directed several short films such as Parallel and Nostos Algos. Since graduating, Aaryn has moved on to study her Masters in Screen Studies at the WA Screen Academy, where she majors in directing. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Aaryn’s goal with filmmaking is to create media that people can see themselves in and feel they are truly represented.
Katy McLean - Writer
Katy McLean is a theatre-maker, filmmaker, actor and writer currently based in Perth, Australia. Katy is known for mining her embarrassing, and somewhat questionable, experiences as a stand-up comic and human being into her work, and she is thrilled to be working on Linger; a short film which illuminates important issues and amplifies the right voices through comedy. She is also co-developing a sardonic feminist comedy, Dishonourable Women, which explores the blunderous nature of being a woman in your twenties.
Justine Hinz - Producer
Justine Hinz is a producer, writer and director from Perth, Australia. After co-writing the web series Monday Night Menace, she went on to study at the Australian Film Television & Radio School (AFTRS) in Sydney where she specialised in Screenwriting for Television. Justine has now moved on to complete her Bachelors degree at the WA Screen Academy, where she specialises in producing and minors in directing. Whilst Justine’s passion lies in the sci-fi/fantasy world, her love for the Linger team and her desire to let the right people tell the right stories is what drew her to this funny story.
Krystal Butterworth - Director of Photography
Krystal is a filmmaker based in Perth, Australia. She is currently studying a Masters in Screen Studies, specialising in cinematography at the WA Screen Academy. Krystal Previously completed her Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Screen Arts (Production) at Curtin University, where during this time, she worked on multiple short films and media projects as a producer, director, and director of photography. Krystal is excited to bring the characters and the world of Linger to life, whilst creating a comedy that is, in her words, “actually funny.”
Julien Walker - Editor
Julien Walker is a director, writer, and editor currently studying at the Western Australian Screen Academy. As someone who loves the wonderful absurdity and rewarding nature of storytelling, there’s no wonder that Julien was drawn to the authentic and hilarious voice of the short film, Linger. Julien couldn’t be more excited to be jumping on board as editor. Joining a dedicated and amazing crew, raring to bring to life an all-too-familiar story of lust, love, and the dangers of politeness.
Haresh Chandra - Sound Designer
Haresh is a musician-turned-filmmaker who specialises in location and post-production sound. He graduated from the WA Screen Academy with the class of 2019, walking away with a Bachelors degree and the Channel 9 Award for Excellence in Sound Design for the short student film, Hy-Brain. Since then, he has worked on a number of corporate videos, short films and documentaries. He currently has three short films; Boshack, Tent Girl and Fading Numbers, which are set for premiere later this year. He is also currently in post-production on his first feature film, Painkiller, as editor and sound designer.
Budget Overview
This is where we need YOUR help!
Catering
In order to run an efficient set, we need our cast and crew to be fed and full of energy! We will be partnering with a lovely self-employed woman who will be cooking us fully vegan and sustainable meals.
Location fees
We have found a location that fits the vision of Linger perfectly, but we need to budget for the tenants to... leave for a while whilst we shoot in their home.
Production Design
Our director has an incredible vision to bring these young characters to life and part of that includes production design. Imagine their environment is as messy and quirky as the way they handle a one-night-stand gone wrong.
Costume
Despite the nature of this story, our characters need to be dressed. All materials will be sustainable and plastic-free.
