'Nest' is a short film written and directed by Rex Kane-Hart as his graduating film from the Victorian College of the Arts. This film is produced by Eve Gill, who is studying her masters of producing at the Victorian College of the Arts.  

Synopsis

Nest is an experimental short drama that explores the fluid nature of memories, dreams and childhood. Our story takes place within the dying breath of an old man named Martin, who in his final moment of life is taken back to his eight-year-old self. Young Martin awakens in a bizarre old mansion that is the manifestation of his subconscious mind. Alone and afraid, he must go in search for the one piece of safety and security he knows, his mother.

As he navigates his way through the chaos of the mansion he is confronted in each room by the many overwhelming characters and events of his life to come. To help deal with the perplexing situation Martin creates an imaginary friend, a humanoid rat named Mount-Dear. The rat is an explosion of Martin's inner thoughts, fears and imagination and helps guide Martin on the journey to find his mother. 

To create a distinct and unique world for the narrative, the film will incorporate handmade puppets and masks along with stop motion animation. 

Shoot dates: 2nd - 6th September, 2016.

The Team

WRITER & DIRECTOR - REX KANE-HART

Rex is studying a Bachelor of Film & Television at the Victorian College of the Arts. Rex is an aspiring filmmaker, who has built up a mixed medium style through his background in animation, sculpture, painting and performance. His work has been displayed in the National Gallery of Victoria.

PRODUCER - EVE GILL

Eve is currently completing her Masters of Producing at the Victorian College of the Arts after previously studying and working as an architect in Melbourne for the last 10 years. Eve brings a love of film and her knowledge and experience in overseeing architectural projects to this production. 

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY - DEAN LUSK

Dean is an emerging cinematographer based in Melbourne and is currenly completing his Bachelor of Film & Television at the Victorian College of the Arts. Dean has worked on a number of short films and music videos and he and Rex have collaborated together on many projects during their time at the VCA.

PRODUCTION DESIGNER - TAMLYN TEOW

Tamlyn is currently completing a Masters in Production Design for Screen at the Victorian College of Arts. Tam previously worked in institutional banking but always had a passion for film and art. In 2013, she decided to embark on an expedition to learn more about the industry, to observe and focus on acquiring as much knowledge to give love back to society through cinematic storytelling.
