In a time where Australian rules football leagues are shut down due to the Coronavirus crisis, like practically every sport, the minds of those of us who love our footy turns to wondering what to spend our days doing. We haven't had much luck as footy fans with games based on our great sport, and Mr Football is here to hopefully change that.

Mr Football is set in an alternate universe which diverges from our own in the 1980s. The long project by Allen Aylett, Ross Oakley and others to create a national competition failed miserably. This failure was so complete that all of the existing teams in the state leagues ran out of money and had to be disbanded. Let us not talk of the sordid details of those terrible times, but focus on the footy clubs that were formed from the wreckage of the doomed "Awful" experiment. Your club is one of these, playing in the same kind of stadiums as exist today with the same sorts of players in the same sport... but in a much different landscape.

  • Be the coach of a football team with full power over list management, player development, team selection and matchday tactics;

  • Build your team up with card packs, both free or paid for using in-app purchases (IAPs), and merge them to form the best players in the land;

  • Customise preset player cards with your own names, or download the most popular customised sets prepared by other coaches;

  • Compete with other coaches in many different game modes, from ladders to divisions to lightning premierships to carnivals;

  • Participate in multiple types of weekly events which reward with in-app currency, cards and other prizes;

  • Join other coaches in factions, where you band together to compete for glory with legendary players.

Mr Football is made up of a range of different influences. It is primarily a management simulation similar to the Football Manager video game series, focused more on streamlined fun. The underlying match mechanics have been loosely based on the Blood Bowl board game, which itself was based on American gridiron. It also has RPG elements in its player development, in a card-based system which is similar to a lot of Chinese antecedents like Heroes Charge and Western adaptations such as Star Trek Timelines and Star Wars Galaxies. Finally, it has a campaign system which ties together elements from all those influences, with a broad focus on exposing the dice rolls that make the system work so that everyone can understand the game's inner workings with however much detail they want to invest in learning how they operate.

Mr Football is not much like the FIFA Mobile game, but one feature of that title which will also appear in this game is the season structure, where many of the in-game currencies and items belonging to the player will be wiped from year to year. FIFA wipes almost everything including VIP status, while Mr Football will not be quite so harsh. All player cards will be wiped after each season, though some of them will be convertible into legendary cards that can only be used in faction play (i.e. guild PVP). This resets the difficulty of the competitions from year to year for new coaches, while still giving long-term coaches an advantage in a key part of the endgame.

The game will be aimed at iOS and Android platforms to begin with. It will be developed in Phaser 3 so theoretically it could be deployed to a wide variety of platforms, as long as they have an iAP capability.

Budget Overview

This is the first title from Tickle Monster, which at the moment is a one-person band consisting of founder Paul Montgomery. Paul has spent the last 15 years developing and maintaining FanFooty, a fantasy Australian rules football site which hits the top 500 Australian sites in traffic during the southern winter with millions of page views per week, which means he has most of the skills necessary to make Mr Football a reality from a technological sense... but he can't draw to save himself. He needs at least one artist, most of all, and some sound production as well. That is where at least half of the Kickstarter funding will go.

Half of the first $10,000 of the funding will go to me, Paul Montgomery, to finish the coding work. The next $5,000 and any funding afterwards will go to hiring artists to create original art assets to replace the placeholders I am working with, mostly in 2D graphical art but also including a few thousand to hire some audio artists as well. The first priority is getting the game up to a working standard, with a bare-bones matchday experience and the minimum amount of art assets. Stretch goals will almost exclusively involve creating more and better content to enhance the look of the game - mainly in the form of animations instead of static images.
