In August 2018, the Melbourne Argonauts Rowing Club will rendezvous in Paris to compete in the 10th International Gay Games

Founded in 2001, we are Australia’s only LGBTIQ+ rowing club, and one of only a handful of such clubs across the globe. Built upon the four core values of Pride, Equality, Participation & Community; we’re a diverse group who strive to make rowing available to everyone regardless of their age, race, gender, or sexual orientation or financial situation.

Now home to more than 100 active rowers, plus many more friends and family who act as our passionate supporters, we’re actively involved in promoting the queer community in mainstream sport and have become a club to watch at competitive regattas.

Competing in a rowing regatta on the other side of the world and representing our community in this international event is an exciting opportunity but with logistics such as boat and equipment hire adding to the typical travel, accommodation and uniform costs, we need your help.

This is why we're seeking YOUR support to help get the Argonauts to Paris!

What is the Gay Games?

From 4 to 12 August 2018, Paris hosts the 10th edition of the GAY GAMES, the world’s largest sporting, cultural and festive event open to all!

Held every four years for more than 32 years, GAY GAMES, a hymn to love, advocates a society for all diversities. Paris is the perfect host to celebrate this 10th edition, which is expected 15,000 participants from over 70 countries! Supported by the highest French institutional and sporting bodies, PARIS 2018 prepares games celebrating diversity, respect, equality, solidarity and sharing.

Facing the world and the future, Paris and the Ile-de-France Region want to deliver GAY GAMES for the greatest number of people in the tradition of the spirit of Tom Waddell, its initiator, who dreamed of a world where the word equality would take its meaning, a world where the exclusion would no longer exist because of any difference.

Budget Overview

Excluding flights to and from Europe, the funds for an individual to compete in Paris, which includes accommodation, regatta fees and equipment hire, is between $800-$900 each. For approximately 20 rowers, we’re looking at around $18,000.

At a minimum, we're hoping to raise $3,000 which should cover uniforms and equipment hire. $5,000 will help pay for accommodation, and if we can hit $10,000 that will make a substantial dent in our registration fees.

Potential Challenges

Some things are out of our control. In the past, increases to or changes of racing fees have been introduced, resulting in additional last minute costs.
