A controversial right-wing media company employs a diversity hire as a way out of a crippling discrimination lawsuit, but he ends up proving more trouble than he’s worth.
SOYBOY is a VCA honours short film set to begin shooting in June 2025, and will be the second mockumentary from VCA student director Moo Renzaho.
SOYBOY is a political comedy that satirises the problematic and unsavoury beliefs espoused by the right-wing and far-right, with a focus on masculinity, identity politics, conservative journalism, and the LGBTQIA+ experience within the conservative political sphere. Exploring the rising prevalence of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in current political discourse.
Through the use of cinéma vérité techniques such as documentary style camera work and editing; and the use of non-actors, unscripted performance, and improvisation, Moo hopes this film will provide a new and refreshing perspective on the political right, and reframe his audience's understanding of conservatism and the potential of propaganda in today's Trumpian/Aussie Nationalist era.
Victoria Lincoln She/Her
Producer
Victoria Lincoln, 24, is an emerging screenwriter, producer, actor and graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) with a degree in Screenwriting .
A voracious reader, writer, and film-buff from a young age, Victoria begin her career crafting short stories, and film reviews for her high school newsletter. Now she writes film reviews for Farrago Magazine, writes short, feature and serial screenplays on spec, note-takes for writer's rooms and produces short films. In her projects, Victoria aspires to provoke thoughtful discussion by exploring harsh social and political realities through a mix of genres from character dramas to sci-fi romance to screw-ball comedy. Throughout her work, she seeks to address large ideas and themes through small-scale scenarios, making these conversations both more accessible and more impactful for audiences. Victoria aspires to create stories that are both thematically universal and culturally specific, often with a distinct Australian quality in language, character and setting.
Moo Renzaho He/Him
Writer/Director
Moo Renzaho, 23, is an ambitious young filmmaker, and comedian based in Naarm, currently completing his honours year of a Film and Television Production degree at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA).
While filmmaking has always been his one true passion, Moo began his creative career on the stage. Completing secondary courses; and appearing in productions with NIDA, the Victorian Youth theatre, the YABC, and the NSW State Drama program, and ultimately graduating from Sydney's Newtown High School of the Creative and Performing Arts before pursuing an undergarduate degree in Directing at VCA.
As both a second generation Congolese-Australian (Bantu) and transgender man, Moo's unique lived experience and personal political fascination is what inspires his work as a filmmaker. His films often aiming a specific focus on masculinity and and homosexuality, and their relation to right-wing ideology, offering viewers a rare but thought-proviking perspective on the reactionary right.
His first film DOG WHISTLE (2023), which followed an ill-fated documentary crew through the inner-workings of a fringe university political organisation, saw moderate festival success, premiering at the 2024 Perth Queer Film Festival and securing a spot as a finalist in the North Hollywood International Film Festival.
