UPDATE!  We've raised our target to $13,000

Will you help us stop Tassie's wildest beaches being trashed!

We need your help!

Do you want to protect Tassie's wildest World Heritage beaches?

UPDATE! We've raised our target to $13,000 to ramp up the impact of our schools education program!  Can you chip in?

Education is crucial in the fight against the polluting plastic rubbish that’s trashing our beaches. Over the past few years we’ve partnered with Expedition Class to develop an online curriculum and run an interactive educational blog where school students can interact daily with a qualified teacher who is embedded on the cleanup expedition. In 2017 we are taking along a year 8 student to experience the cleanup first hand and write a daily blog.

We currently have 1500 Tasmanian students engaged with this awesome initiative, but we want to increase the impact of our education program across Australasia!

Can you chip in and help us:

  • Reach more schools AND more students across Australia
  • Further develop the curriculum
  • Pay for extra satellite data to get more fantastic pictures out to the kids (it’s really really pricey!)

Are you ready to fight the disgusting wave of plastic rubbish that's choking our oceans, killing our marine life and washing ashore on Tassie's most spectacular beaches?

Jump on deck and join Team Clean now!

This February, a small and dedicated team of hardy volunteers will embark on a mega cleanup expedition to the remote south west coast of Tasmania. They'll be slogging their guts out to clean up the thousands and thousands of pieces of the rubbish that wash up on the spectacular beaches of the World Heritage Area.

Cleaning up these incredibly remote ecosystems doesn’t come cheap. Chip in and help us make the 2017 trip the biggest and most effective cleanup ever! By donating to this 100% non-profit volunteer expedition, you can do your bit to protect these beautiful wilderness beaches.

Over 82,000 pieces of dirty polluting rubbish

Yep. That's not a typo - the 2016 expedition cleaned up 82,815 pieces of rubbish from the sand (we painstakingly count and classify a mountain of trash every night).

This amazing annual expedition has been keeping Tassie's spectacular World Heritage beaches clean since 1999.

Check out the video of the awesome story that ABC's 7:30 ran on the 2015 cleanup expedition here.

The cleanup is used as a powerful tool for public education, advocacy and behaviour change. It plays a unique part in the broader global campaign to tackle marine debris, protect our oceans and promote positive and inspiring solutions to this critical problem.

How The Funds Will Be Used

UPDATE: we've raised our target to $13,000 to ramp up the impact of our schools education program

The extra $3,000 will help us:

  • Reach more schools AND more students across Australia
  • Further develop the curriculum
  • Pay for extra satellite data to get more fantastic pictures out to the kids (it’s really really pricey!)

Cleaning up some of the world’s most remote and inaccessible beaches does not come cheap. The majority of beaches targeted by the cleanup are accessible only by sea via fishing boats and dinghies.

By making a donation to this 100% volunteer-run non-profit initiative, you will be contributing to:

  • The significant transport costs required to access these remote areas
  • High energy food to keep our hardy volunteers out on the beaches and cleaning for as long as possible each day
  • The purchasing of essential tools to help us with the rubbish collection and with the important collection of data, so we can measure not only our progress, but the long term impacts of marine debris on the wild beaches of Tasmania’s west coast

The Challenges

Our biggest challenge is the sheer quantity of toxic rubbish trashing our coasts!

By cleaning up the wild beaches of Tasmania’s World Heritage Area annually, and using the project as an important tool to educate, inspire and activate the Australian community, we are making an important contribution to the global campaign to clean up our marine environment.

Another challenge for the cleanup crew is to reach as many beaches, for as many hours as possible, during the annual cleanup. Tasmania’s west coast is characterised by its wild and woolly weather conditions and some seriously big seas.

Luckily, we have a four boat team of some of Tasmania’s finest and most experienced skippers, who have been sailing the wild seas of the west coast for decades. These legends donate their time, their incredible skills, and their boats to make the expedition happen every year, and to keep the beaches clean.

Patagonia

Patagonia pledges 1% of sales annually to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. Since 1985 that has totalled over $78 million in cash and kind to small, grassroots environmental groups all over the world.

In Australia, Patagonia is asking you to donate alongside us to help fund six key environmental projects. The Double Down campaign will see each dollar you donate to any of these projects matched by Patagonia up to a total of $50,000.

The Double Down… You donate. We Match. Nature wins twice. To find out more go to doubledown.patagonia.com.au. If you’d like to receive updates from Patagonia, sign up here.
