‘Yin and Yang’ is a short drama following Lila, a 6 year old girl who is half Chinese but does not look like it. She confides in a print out of Jackie Chan as she navigates her identity in the first grade.

The project will go into porduction in early 2025, with Head of Department roles filled by students of Swinburne University, completing their Honours year. The short drama tackles themes of Identity, belogning, alienation, family and innocence through the eyes of 6-year-old protagonist, Lila Chan.

'Yin & Yang' is a short drama set in 2006, following six year old Lila, who is half Chinese but does not look like it. The film focuses on Lila’s struggle to make sense of her mixed race identity as she confides in a print out of Jackie Chan because of their shared surname. Along with the Chinese children, Lila experiences uneasy moments of micro racism at school. This causes her to battle feelings of sadness and guilt towards her own heritage. Later that week, Lila brings her grandmother and father to school for Culture Day. She is excited to be sharing her family’s history at school when a Chinese girl from class, Scarlett, becomes upset and accuses Lila of copying her and saying she is not “real Chinese.”
