So you’ve got a great story to pitch?

Here are four key things to do before approaching the press.

Audience

Know your target audience and where they consume their information. Are they in certain industries? How old are they? What are their main interests?

Research

Learn which media outlets cover stories that are similar to your own and appear to the same audience. Build a rapport with publications that share similar values to your own.

Pitch

Keep your pitch short and sweet. Focus in on one idea or story rather than cramming in multiple angles.

Timing

Press are less likely to cover a campaign that's under 50% funded. Plan when you send out your press release – perhaps before an important launch date or when your campaign reached a key milestone.
