'The Palace That I Live In' is a look inside the unusual life of 17 year-old Poppy, who resides in a makeshift home with her eccentric mother. Contrasting Poppy's reality with her vividly imagined dreams, this short film explores ideas of what it is to live a normal life. Aesthetically it is inspired by films such as 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' and 'Tideland'.

Why do we need your help?

You can't put a price on the spirit of artistic collaboration, but unfortunately you can put a price on everything else that goes into filmmaking. With your donations, we will be able to use high quality equipment in production and post production, enter festivals, and complete the film to a high enough standard for it to be recognised at an International level.

Your donations will be put toward:

- petrol / transport costs

- gear hire

- costumes

- props

- set design

- food to fill hungry crew bellies!

Even the smallest contribution you can afford will go a long way to help make this film happen.

Written by lead actress Lâle Teoman and to be directed by Sydney-based filmmaker Aimée-Lee X. Curran, 'The Palace That I Live In' will be the pair's third collaboration together.

Lâle and Aimée-Lee recently got together to open up about 'The Palace That I Live In', and to talk about how much the project really means to each of them:

Lâle, how did you find the experience of writing the script?

Lâle: "It had been lingering around in my mind for a while. I had pieced it together before writing it down so it pretty much wrote itself by that time."

What were your main inspirations?

Lâle: "I recently had the chance to work with a good friend of mine, Matilda Brown and her dad Bryan Brown on a series Matilda wrote called ‘Lessons From The Grave’. She cast Bryan in the role as her Dad and it was so beautiful to watch them acting off one another as father and daughter both in real life and as fictional characters. I wanted to have that experience myself with my own mother, who is also a wonderful actress."

Is the story autobiographical in any way?

Lâle: "Yes it is. I believe the best stories you have to tell come from within yourself, because they are unique and truthful."

What makes the story special?

Aimée-Lee: "Well not only is the script based on real events, but the mother and daughter characters are being played by the real people. It will be very magical to see how the reality of their situation and their memories of it entangle with fiction and storytelling."

Aimée-Lee, what most drew you to the opportunity to direct?

Aimée-Lee: "Initially just the fact that Lâle had written it was enough to draw me to the project. After reading the script I was struck by just how different the style was to anything I would write myself. My films are quite dialogue driven, whereas these characters tend to speak without saying anything. I’ve never directed anything I didn’t write, so the learning experience alone was something I didn’t want to pass up. More importantly, this is a very special and personal story to Lâle, and I was honoured she trusted me enough to ask me to direct it."

So how exactly does it feel preparing to direct a film written by another?

Aimée-Lee: "I’m very excited. It feels extremely liberating actually, because the characters haven’t come from inside my head. It’s as if they're wandering around, waiting to make my acquaintance, and when we finally meet each other I won’t be slavishly adhering to any preconceived ideas I have of them or of what they should be like."

Lâle, what's it like writing a character for yourself to play?

Lâle: "It felt like the most logical thing to do! It’s so difficult to get auditions, let alone good acting roles in this country, especially if you don’t exactly fit the mould, so I figured I better just create one myself. I’m really excited to work with Hunter Page as well. He's a young actor from 'The Sapphires' and 'Around The Block', who will be playing the role of Jack."

How did you come about casting Hunter Page-Lochard ('Bran Nue Dae', 'The Sapphires', 'Around the Block') as Jack?

Aimée-Lee: "I am often very disappointed that Australian film and television is so 'white', and yet we live in an enormous melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities! If there are non-white faces on screen they are usually playing drug dealers, immigrants or some kind of 'spiritual' character. I try to cast people from different racial backgrounds in all of my films, without exploiting it as some kind of unique character trait. I was lucky enough to work with Hunter on a feature film called 'Around the Block', also starring Christina Ricci and one of my favourite Australian actors, Jack Thompson.Hunter is a joy to work with and a rising talent so I was naturally drawn to him."

Hunter, what made you want to become involved with 'The Palace That I Live In'?

Hunter: "I wanted to be involved, genuinely for the experience, and of course the story and idea itself. You can't help but enjoy your own and others imaginations."
