Alex Giles

Pinwheel Productions is the baby of Alex Giles & Kaleigh Wilkie-Smith, a writing/producing/performing/directing/storytelling duo based in Sydney, Australia. 

The original work "The Tale of Ichabod Scrubb" is their maiden voyage with Pinwheel, set to perform at the Blood Moon Theatre in Kings Cross, beginning January 24. It is an original story using music, puppetry, audience interaction, immersive design and physical theatre to follow Ichabod as he explores the world to find his sister and his courage.

Ichabod loses his sister, and on the journey to find her, faces his biggest fear - water.
Assisted by a senile knight who refuses to take off his armour, an all knowing barge captain and a bucket-wielding water-thief, Ichabod traverses swamps, ravines and crosses bridges and cities in his quest for his sister. The tale follows Ichabod's journey to find what he's really looking for; love, hope and above all, courage.

With nothing but a cart full of janitor’s supplies, the troupe of 7 use puppetry, physical theatre, design and audience interaction to create the world of Ichabod Scrubb. Rivers, forests, swamplands, cliff faces, barges and windmills are just a few of the staging/design aspects of the show. Puppetry is used to create little handheld characters such as “Mop” the dog (created from a mop head), “Hand” the fish (created with a bedazzled rubber glove) and the lake monster, a tentaculous enormity that springs from the depths to challenge Ichabod and his band of friends. 

Ichabod was inspired by found object design/instrumentalist actors productions such as Squabbalogic’s Man of La Mancha, the works of PigPen Theatre Company and the Broadway production Peter and the Starcatchers, as well as immersive theatre such as Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More in NYC and recording artists such as The Oh Hello’s and The Lumineers.

Putting on a show is expensive! But we want to give our creatives as much wiggle room on a lowfi budget as possible - the pozible campaign will help us make our show a reality.

Arts funding is few and far between - we have applied for various grants including Australia wide and NSW based, but these grants are often very competitive and have long waiting periods before we recieve our results, and we need to pay for a lot of things. Despite the fact that we are putting a lot of our own money into the show and we have a few supportive investors, we're still a little short. 

We're determined to tell this story with whatever we can beg borrow or steal, and we hope that audiences will agree that new Australian theatre has stories still to tell - So come on and get your feet wet on the journey with us to tell "The Tale of Ichabod Scrubb".
