MOTOWN is a ten-minute short film shot on 16mm film seeking to celebrate music's ability to express the inexpressible. Like film, music is an inherently complex form of communication that transcends verbal language and reveals emotional truths from within the artist.
MOTOWN tells the story of a nineteen-year old girl who, in order to escape the restrains of everyday life, enters an empty concert hall late at night.

The idea of the story stems from Alex Wu's (writer and director) love for music, and his subsequent reliance on music for emotional stability that has followed suit.
MOTOWN will be shot on 16mm film with the ARRIFLEX SR3, with a stylistic naturalism reminiscent of the works of Krzysztof Kieslowski, Darren Aronofsky and Steve McQueen. This, combined with the beautiful art-deco interiors of Melbourne's Melba Hall will create a divine image to compliment the emotions of the music and story of the film.
MOTOWN is Alex's graduating film for his Bachelor of Film and Television at the Victorian College of the Arts.

How The Funds Will Be Used
The funds given to support our film will go towards the following:
Costs for 16mm film stock and processing - $3,000
Equipment rental costs - $1,000
(Including camera, lighting and sound gear - we're recording music live, on set!)
Location fees - $500
Catering for cast and crew - $500
Distribution and marketing - $1,000
TOTAL BUDGET = $6,000
Every cent we can raise above the target of $4,000 will allow us the freedom of not having to make creative compromises in favour of our budget.

The Challenges
With an amazing team behind the project, our main concern is making sure that we provide a safe and enjoyable environment for the cast and crew at all times during production - film shoots should never be more stressful than they need to be. Our aim with this project is ultimately to tell a beautiful story and capture it on film - if we can raise the sufficient funds, we won't have to worry about financial pressures and can go full throttle into the production of MOTOWN.
