Artist Wants A Life - The Documentary
My name is Alexandra Hullah. I am a creative living and working out of Melbourne, Australia.
I am seeking your assistance to travel to the remote central deserts of the Northern Territory, Australia to take part in and continue to contribute to an exciting creative project - Artist Wants A Life.
I have currently assisted Artist Wants A Life, or AWAL, by creating the project’s website, www.artistwantsalife.org, allowing the project to be successfully broadcast to a wider audience.
I have now been invited to participate during the upcoming artist camp for the purpose of producing a documentary film about this significant event. The film will then be presented, and screened, as part of the Goolwa conference in Alexandrina in October 2012 (http://artsalexandrina.org.au/). My presence at the camp will also mean hands-on support in gathering interesting material to publish to the project website and blog as the camp unfolds.
The AWAL project has limited funds, with the focus being on providing assistance to the selected artists and the logistics a project of this magnitude entails. It has relied on the contributions of enthusiastic and multi-skilled individuals to volunteer their time and expertise.
We now need further assistance in realising this documentary film and the online publication of documentative material, which the project sees as vital to the long-term ambitions and wider impact of the AWAL project.
More about ARTIST WANTS A LIFE
Artist Wants A Life is a unique artists’ lab that is run by artists for artists and will be run as a two-week camp in a remote location outside of Alice Springs in the deserts of Central Australia during April 2012. The project brings together 10 artists, 5 local to Central Australia and 5 from the broader Australian creative community.
The project aims to provide a real platform for exchange between regional/remote artists and urban artists, develop individual and collaborative skills and create opportunity for artistic relationships to be formed, spanning the geographic divide.
Beth Sometimes (AWAL Provocateur) writes about Artist Wants A Life:
“It will stand round the fire of cultural heat and surf the waves of the inland sea.”
More information about the project and the final selection of artists can be found on the website, http://www.artistwantsalife.org/
The AWAL doco
The Doco will focus on documenting the collaborations and interactions between artists participating in the camp, the established artists (provocateurs) who are facilitating these interactions, and the production behind the scenes, as they are essentially marooned amongst the environs of the central australian desert for the two-week duration of the camp -
It is anticipated that the documentary as well as the online blog will provide a raw depiction of what it is to create art and to investigate and propagate some of the uniquely Australian perspectives that are apparent in our remote/regional and urban creative communities
The documentary will be screened at Goolwa conference in Alexandrina in October 2012 -(http://artsalexandrina.org.au/) - “a conference for professional artists, arts workers, volunteers, local shire and council employees interested in fostering and maintaining their local arts and culture.”
Booting Goals - Where you come in
If the funding goal is reached, it will enable my continued participation and mean I will be able to play a vital role in increasing the impact this project can have on a wider audience, increase the profile of remote communities and ultimately have some impact in diminishing the chasms that complicate communications between the wonderfully diverse creative practices within Australia - one of the goals of the AWAL project.
I am seeking assistance in funding the documentation part of the project. Funds raised will assist in costs of travel to the Northern Territory and logistical expenses involved solely for documenting, filming and web publication material for the Artist Wants A Life project.
In the spirit on my involvement with AWAL, I have offered my services at a not-for-profit rate.
ABOUT ALEX:
Alex is a South-African Australian artist & art director, who has a vested interest in the collisions of cultures, and believes in the value of creativity where these collisions occur, that they can inform insight and understanding. She has worked on feature films and documentaries (Rebel Films and Fragile Films), provided technical and design support to worthy causes (Be Kind to Animals Week Campaign) and maintains a fine arts practice. She currently resides in Melbourne where she runs Sweatshop Creative, a multi-disciplined art and design practice.
With your support, my involvement means I will gain valuable experience and have the opportunity to put my money where my mouth is... er, your money where the megaphone is.
This is one of those projects, folks.
Please assist however you can.
To sweeten the deal there are a few rewards I am able to offer for those that contribute to this project - including original artwork and a video short of the doco...
If you cannot contribute financially but want to help out please spread the word :)
Pledge ANY amount between now and closing (11am 26th April) and you will have your name raised on a flag atop the mountain above the campsite - Honeymoon Gap. (We will post you a photo).
You will receive a small drawing/sketch/art-piece by a participating AWAL artist that will be posted to the contributor. All those that contribute any amount will also have your name published to the project website.
In the spirit of the project (bringing communities together and sharing creative processes with a wider audience) those who contribute $50 or more will receive a 'preview' dvd compilation of video material from the filming of the project with a personalised video thankyou message spoken by a AWAL participating artist naming you as the contributor.
If you provide a photo of yourself and a postal address you will receive an original 20cmx20cm portrait executed by myself. Check out an example of these portraits in the image provided.
Those that contribute $250 or higher will receive a painting of great value. All you need to do is provide me with a sentence that will set the theme for the painting (ie: "Let the peasants eat cake!" for the image provided)
